So as I told @Milo Willamson, it was time to shit or get off the pot. And I did. I bought a new phone. Even started a new board with it.

Yes, I stuck with Motorola--but didn't get the phone I actually wanted. The Edge+ can only be used with Verizon [in the US]. I absolutely refuse to dump my embarrassingly cheap Consumer Cellular plan for Verizon. [Keep in mind I'm on Wi-Fi 99.99% of the time.]

After scouring the phone comparison chart, I decided on the Motorola One Hyper, for a number of reasons. As previously stated, I couldn't care less about a phone's cameras. I have real Nikon cameras for serious picture taking. So that was no part of my consideration. Its screen size--a full inch bigger than my Z² Force, and all-screen--most definitely was. It's awesome!

Having Android 10 was also a deciding factor.

Setup was the fastest and most painless of all my phones; I was up and running in no time.

After enabling Developer Options, I hit a roadblock trying to get System UI Tuner. I actually had to... gasp... RTFM. Why'd they make it so convoluted in 10?

Aside from the time now being on my left, everything's pretty much as expected. Oh, I don't have the 'clock lights up when my hand approaches' the idle phone feature, as on the Z. I don't know yet if this is a setting I've missed, or it's discontinued, or what.

It's too soon to know if certain issues, like that god-awful refresh that resets all my file manager tabs, will be gone now. I hope so.

This phone has 128GB of space--double that of the Z, and I never used >50% of it. So I should be good for a long time.

All in all, I think this was an excellent choice based on what I needed. I really analyzed how I do, and don't, use my phone on a typical day, and this fits the bill.

  2. Good choice. Congrats.

It's the best of their Moto One range in the view of many.

Here's what Tech Radar said of the AOD substitute:

"There’s also a feature called Peek Display. Compensating for the fact that there isn’t an Always On Display on the One Hyper, Peek Display brings up essential phone information when it detects movement, and offers up shortcuts to get you into apps quickly."

    Thanks, @Madasa. :)

I had shut off 'peek display' during setup, not knowing then it was a replacement for what I was used to. I've now enabled it. One difference: you have to actually touch the phone to trigger it. Well, close enough!

Nope, a Moto Z² Force. It's only a year old, but what the hell?! :D

Okay--the damned refresh thing just happened. All the tabs in my file manager reset to their startup locations--just like on the old phone.

I have almost no apps installed [other than preinstalled ones, and a handful of my regular apps], virtually nothing running or doing anything that should cause this, but there it is. I really wish I knew how to stop it.

At least yours is a year old! I've had my Note 10+ since December and IF I move up to the Note 20 Ultra, it will be the shortest time I've owned and used a phone at 9 months*!

*- The second shortest time was after the Note 7 double recall. I broke down and bought a cheap Note 5 to hold me over until the Note 8 was released. It lasted me 11 months and more than paid for itself with the $450 trade-in Samsung offered to former Note 7 owners. Cha-Ching!

    mikedt 你好

I had my Note 7 for 3 weeks, and got full refund. That's the shortest time I've had a phone. Longest time I've had a smart-phone is my current Huawei Mate 10, bought Jan 2018, and no intention to change at the moment
