Nexus s unlocked?

Ok right now I have an epic 4g. I really want a nexus s 4g but I would have to try and sell my phone on eBay and then buy the phone outright for full retail. I want to know how unlocked phones work. Do you need to sign up for service with tmobile? Or can you just buy a nexus s unlocked and pop in a sim card? Can you switch your phone number on a carrier to an unlocked phone? I really need to know as much as possible about an unlocked phone so i may be able to get the gsm nexus s.

The Nexus s 4g will only work on Sprint. Unless they find a way to flash it to Verizon or another cdma network. The tmobile version is unlocked out of the box, and I am currently using mine on simple mobile.

I bought mine unsubsidized and off contract at best buy for $529 before taxes.
