Root Official Unrevoked Developers have Froyo on EVO

I don't have root. My EVO is an un-rooted, stock phone.

What you are saying that if I do this, and I want to root my EVO later I won't be able to root my EVO?

Forever?

It's this the confirmation?

Thats correct, you would have to wait for someone to figure out a new way to root, and it probably wont be a high priority since people had been warned that would happen if they did it.

It's just when people post about losing root, they all assume everyone has their EVO rooted.

That's not the case.

They should say:

"If you are rooted now, you will lose root if you download this file"

When they say

"If you download this, you will lose root" . I am thinking that I will never be able to root my EVO for all eternity.

My only concern now is if I download this file and install update, what happens with the file HTC will send starting 8/3?

Will my EVO pick up the update?

Will it say I am already updated?

Will it brick my phone? (if I apply the "official" update after I installed this today)

That's my concern now.

if you are concerned then wait until you get the FOTA from Sprint/HTC directly.

Same here. Just downloaded it on my PC but no way am I trying this out yet. I don't even know what to rename it has and where to send it on my SD card to have my phone pick it up.

If you download the one from HTC you will get the official update. This is it. You just won't receive notification because your software is up to date.

OK - here's the solution to that confusion (and nothing personal, I'm going to shout because you're probably not alone and I'd like this to get noticed so as to not need repeating ;)) -

The link to this HTC resource is from the unrEVOked twitter page.

unrEVOked makes one of the popular rooting tools.

It's a service to their users to put in the warning that they will lose root.

Android baby - it's the Wild West, just like Walt Mosspuppet said it was.

These directions worked for me: Manually Update Your Nexus One To Android 2.2 Froyo! | Android Phone Fans

At the part where it gets to the "picture of the phone and the triangle" in recovery mode, it took a while for the phone to be responsive to the power+up press, but it worked eventually.

After the reboot at the end, it took a long time to finish updating and get to the launcher, but eventually finished. My internal memory and apps are all intact. The Droid X multitouch keyboard crashes with Froyo, and Swype no longer recognizes it as an approved device and doesn't seem to want to let me swipe, so I guess it's back to the HTC keyboard. That's all I know so far. Ok, back to work for me. Have fun!

Is someone downloading this as we speak?

Does it take a long time? The file is 84MB.

I think I will download it and then wait if someone updates the "official" one on Tuesday and see what happens.

I know that someone will eventually do it, unless my EVO picks up that I am "up to date" and I won't receive any notification from HTC, which is the best case scenario.

:)
