Help Phantom ringtone (?)

Hi, newbie here. I have the LG Optimus V, love it. One thing, though--sometimes I'll hear a 'phantom ringtone', where I think my notification ringtone has gone off. But when I check the phone, there's no texts, no gmail, zero notifications. I can't help but wonder...did I just imagine that ringtone going off?

When it happens, It's not like I'm anticipating a call or text, I'm usually at work or reading. Typically I'm not even thinking about my phone when it occurs. I may be going crazy, but this used to happen with my old flip phone as well, a Kyocera TNT. The only common denominator = Virgin Mobile service. Thanks, --j

No, there's another common denominator. Your ears. I don't want to come across as if I think you're crazy, so hear me out. I have severe tinnitus, and a 30% hearing loss in one ear. I "hear" my phone going off all the time, when it isn't. In order to not miss calls all the time, I use custom ringtones with a 6db boost. So, if I may be so bold, you might want to schedule an appointment with an ENT, or other hearing specialist.

Well, you may be on to something--I have some hearing loss as well. But my ringtone is rather unique--check the 'Heaven' ringtone on the Optimus V, which is the sound of a harp. That's not something one would hear with tinnitus, is it? My notification ringtone on my old Kyocera sounded like a xylophone--when I was using that phone, I'd sometimes hear a phantom ringtone as well.

It's just really curious. Maybe these sounds linger in the subconscious and some external stimuli triggers that audio memory.

My girlfriend has experienced this problem several times lately. Her notification sound (for texts, etc., separate from a ringtone) will randomly occur, and when the phone is checked there will be no alerts. This isn't a tinnitus issue or anything of the sort, we both hear the sound. We have no idea what's causing it, though it's only happened in the last few days. My guess is that an app was updated and is now misbehaving.

I get this occasionally with email. I'll see and read a new email on my desktop. Then a short while later my phone will sound an alert and then immediately remove the notification.

ive had the phantom ringtone happen to me a few times too. it hasnt been lately...actually it hasnt happened since i rooted, but i was researching it before and i read on here somewhere about the email issue you mentioned
