Help Problem connecting Nexus One to PC via USB

So I got a Google Nexus One with Android 2.3.6 on it for Christmas, and the first thing I wanted to do was put some music on it. So I got the USB cable out, plugged it into my Vista laptop, plugged the other end into the phone and...... nothing. The light at the top of the phone turned green to show that it was charged, but nothing came up about enabling USB mass storage. And the strange thing is my brother has exactly the same laptop as me: an Acer Aspire 7735G, and it works fine on his laptop, the window pops up, you select "Turn on mass storage" or whatever it is, and you're away.

So can someone please explain to me what's going on?

Thanks :p
