Problem Sending SMS w/ 3rd party apps

I have installed both Go SMS Pro and Handcent to my phone to replace my stock SMS program. They are only allowing me to send SMS's if they contain MORE than 160 characters. I normally do not send messages that long. When I try to send shorter messages, I get a message saying error message not sent. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
