Root Questions before flashing CM7

I'm interested in the new CM7 Gingerbread rom. Before I take the leap into this ROM, I had a couple questions...

1) Where can I find the most up to date version of this? I'm seeing links for RC2 etc. Are we up to RC3?

2) Is it necessary to flash a new kernel with this ROM? I've never upgraded the kernel and wouldnt know where to begin with it.

dude rc4 just came out yesterday. it is not neccessary to flash a kernel but i use chad's GB 03182011 kernel ( i think) because i feel it has superior battery life for me set to smartass and 128/998

You'll find it in rom manager under the cyanogen section.
It comes with a kernel(as do all roms), no need to flash another kernel, other than to experiment with battery life and performance. You'd flash a new kernel after the rom if you wanted a different one.

Awesome. I don't usually use ROM manager for flashing roms, but It does seem to be the simplest way.

Do you know where I can find screenshots of the dialer and lockscreens for this rom?

Don't use rom manager to flash it just to download. It uses the vanilla lockscreen, but customizable and can be changed from within the rom. The dialer is just like the regular vanilla dialer just different color to it(black/green) I use "dialer one" which is customizable and functions more like the sense dialer.
