Hi everyone, I am very green to android and I have just purchased an unlocked samsung galaxy s2 and will be receiving it shortly. I had a few very generalized questions and some more specific ones, it would be greatly appreciated if someone took the time to answer some questions for me.

    1. Can you install .apk programs on non rooted devices?
    2. Has anyone tried to install the patched skype for video calling?
I found this file on on a forum Skype with Video Support for Various Devices... and I was wondering if it would work on an un rooted deviced?
    3. I have been trying to find out about whether or not the galaxy s2 is on netflix's list of supported devices but I have no idea where to find this list, the netflix.ca website for some reason only lists apple products under supported mobile devices. Does anyone know if netflix is support on an unrooted sII?

    4. General rooting question: Does rooting make it difficult to receive updates from samsung? ie updating from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4?

    5. Do you need to re root everytime you update the software?

    Thanks

    1. no u dont need to be rooted. u can install .apk files on non-rooted android phones
    2. yes i have, it works perfectly. the new skype version on the market supports the SGS2, though. however, the patched version has a few advanced features such as an Exit button, that the official skype app does not have. some prefer the patched one. i prefer the official one, coz its much easier to get updates. thats about it.
    3. not sure about this
    4. rooting makes it difficult to get official samsung updates via kies, but there's nothing to stop u from updating software via Odin.. its much faster than the samsung updates via kies
    5. yes u do

    Hi

Sorry to barge in on this thread but I too am very new to android phones and have just got the Samsung Galaxy S2. I would like to use Skype video calling.

I am on the Three all you can eat data plan but understand Three still charges 51p per minute for video calls.

I read somewhere you can use Skype to make video calls and it is FREE - does anyone know if that's correct?

If so, how do I go about installing Skype on my Galaxy SII and how do I then use it to make a free video call to someone?

Would be hugely grateful for any help on this - the more spoonfeeding the better as I am a complete novice with android phones and not very up on apps etc.

    Thx in advance!

cheers. im a foreigner living in ho chi minh city :D

yes, of course skype makes free video calls :) from skype to skype, of course. that means u can only contact a person using skype, that could be on another mobile or on a computer.

just search for skype on the android market :D and u can install it..

im surprised u didnt know that skype allows free video calls, 'skyping' has almost become a word like google :D
