Stop auto sych of contacts

Just got a Samsung Galaxy S and it pulled in 1000 contacts from Gmail, Facebook, wherever. I've spent two days trying to delete but they all continue to return in a few hours. At this point I want them all deleted and I'll just put in the ones I want but I figure there's an auto-synch feature somewhere I need to turn off. Any help appreciated! I have enough gray hair already...

menu-settings-accounts and sync. For facebook, you may need to go into the facebook app's settings to turn off sync there.,
