Help Touch Screen stops responding

After turning my phone on, I am able to unlock it once. If i lock it using the button on the top-right of the phone, the toch screen stops working. The same problem happens if the backlight timer runs out. The touch screen becomes unresponsive and I must power down the device by removing the battery. I then turn the phone back on and am able to unlock my phone, but the touch screen becomes unresponsive again after locking the device or letting the backlight timer run out. This issue has been occuring for over a day.
