Help Turning Off Applications

I go to "Settings" and then "Applications".
Once in "Applications", I go to "Running Services" and turn off certain applications I am not using.

How long are these applications supposed to stay off: Until I turn my phone back on again? Until I turn my display back on?

I hope I am making sense.

I am trying to improve my battery life.
I have turned off the background data and uninstalled the app killer. My display goes off after 30 seconds and I already have the brightness as low as it goes (I do this on every phone, I see no need to have a crazy bright screen).

If you really want a noticable increase in battery life you should root your phone. You can then remove the bloatware that Verizon has installed. As for you question I apologize but have no answer.
