Root ubuntu help

Im using virtual box to set up ubuntu just going thro installation but it doesnt recognize any os on my pc and asks will it just dedicate whole 8gb to ubuntu is this normal?

When you're setting up a virtual PC, if you have no pre-built images to import, you will have to assign the virtual PC a data store before you install it. Assuming you are doing this on a Computer, and you have 8GB free to play with, that should be easily enough.

Was running it all weekend on my Desktop - it's actually quite good once you get used to it. Shame it corrupted my XP install as I'd planned on dual booting it but it wouldn't load XP once Ubuntu was installed

1st things 1st

if you are doing it on a virtual machine use Vmware player and not virtualbox
reason for this is simple, virtualbox is very bad at allocating resource and integrating itself to the host os

ubuntu is very easy to install via vmware player
just locate the iso when you build the virtual machine and it will auto boot to it as media
when installing pick the option during install for vmware tools (if you dont do this you need linux knowledge to install it later)
its a quick install and vmware player supports drag and drop and detects usb storage instantly

XP isn't the best dual boot platform. VMware is the way forward IMHO. You can get it free too.

i have ubuntu on a vm on my test bed. the uac is more annoying than windows and you have to unlock root via sudo -i

I've had no issues with Virtual Box personally, might look at VMWare though

You have to apply for a licence still, even though its free (I think)

VMware Player: Run Windows 7, Chrome OS - Free Download for a Virtual PC

VMware is industry standard. It is better than anything else IMHO. Also does not rely on 64 bit virtualisation technology unlike stupifd things like XP mode.

I had to register and apply for a 10 server licence when I downloaded it about a year ago. They then emailed me the licence key (which I still have) Free licence mind. Could have changed.

Ah I'll have to get that. I have some VMDK's to import off my old PC at somepoint. My Domain controller and citrix farm. How Sad am I?!

its not partitioning your physical drive
its making an 8gig container file and formatting within it
its going to take 8 gigs of space but not formatting physicall hdd space to create it

Yeah, Ubuntu will see the Virtual Disk (at whatever size it is set to) and then ask if you want to use the whole disk. If you were to load the actual Ubuntu CD on your PC it will ask if you want to partition the HD to dual boot with Windows
