uploading galaxy 3 photos to mac pro

I am trying to upload pictures from my galaxy 3 to my mac book pro. I downloaded Kies, clicked on it and plugged my phone in via usb port. The device does not come up. I do not know where to find "connected as a camera" on the phone. It also does not appear on the notification panel.
