Nice to see that Moto has finally paid attention to the bezels. What I don't get is why they wasted so much area under the screen. If there is an engineering reason (screen to board connector?), then they could have at least used the area for touch buttons like the droid.

They need that space for all the hardware. Plus, its a razt phone not a shorty phone :)

Then, as I said, they should have overlay-ed capacitive buttons in the area.

Then they would've had to have made the phone even bigger to make room for the button hardware. Because as you know by looking inside of a smartphone, there is no extra/wasted space. :smokingsomb:

Google wants on screen nav buttons, and obviously Google is having an affect on Moto. Just look at the stripped down Blur that barley lays over Android now.

I agree, but there is a lot of space compared to other phones.

There really isn't that much space.

You can compare it to the bionic. Same amount of space below the screen and the bottom of the phone. However, the bionic utilizes this space that is wasted on the razr hd.

I'm all for on screen buttons, but if you have the same amount of space at the bottom, may as well have the capacitive buttons.

I agree, all those with big chins at least have buttons as a reason. HD seems to have a J-Leno chin.

First of all, there are electronics that still need to fit in the space provided which is why the extra space. Secondly jelly been doesn't need capacitive buttons and this design makes the Razr HD more future proof. Capacitive buttons are now redundant on any device running 4.1 and above.

I will be interested interested to see a tear down of these phones.
What is packed in there? Electronics are getting smaller, this phone is bigger, so I don't know what they have to pack in there.

There are many smaller phones that have all of the same things. The only bigger things are the screen and battery.

Also, I understand the capacitive buttons are out, but if you are going to waste real estate on the front of the phone, use if for something.

Even if nothing was packed in there ever so tightly, you have to remember that these phones are coming with dual core and quad core processors. These things generate a lot of heat and are passively cooled, which means no fans. Gotta dispense that heat somewhere. Atleast I don't know of any phones off the top of my head thats actively cooled.

I don't know of any manufacturer of cel phones that would intentionally make a phone larger just because they could. Especially with smallness and thinness (is that a word?) being such big selling features.

I'm pretty sure everything is packed in the phones in the most efficient manor that they can design. And with batteries getting bigger evrything else needs to be smaller out of necessity.

I think if they could figure out how to put a 5" screen in a 4" phone they would do it. Haha!

I just want to point out that the Droid DNA got it right, no wasted space below the screen. Still prefer the Maxx battery and Motorola over HTC. Hopefully the next generation of the Razr will fix this.

I measured my Bionic, and there is enough room for a 5" screen if the screen is edge to edge and started where the original screen starts and goes down to where the buttons are.

The space at the top (screen to top of phone) seems comparable to most other phones.

I went to the store and played with the DNA. The "forehead" is a bit larger, but not out of control.

There is serious "size creep" with the phones. I'm all for a bigger screen, but the foot print of the phone doesn't have much room for increasing. DNA seems a bit to large.

I hope the next iteration squeezes a 5" screen onto a phone the size of the bionic (in terms of width and height).

I found an old belt clip for an HTC diamond, It's incredible how thin and wide these phones are getting now!

I think the HD is awesome, great size and I can hold it sideways with 2 fingers no problem. The maxx HD, not so much. HD has great battery life! I'd love to see a larger screen in this form factor and maybe a little less weight, but DO NOT SACRIFICE any battery life.

Friend was looking at phones at work, like the atrix hd on att, man his iphone looked like it was 50% chin, lol.

The lack of an sd slot killed this device for me. That and the relatively small fixed battery.

It would be nice if Android came up with a way to give the user all the display space rather than waste at least 15% with a navigation bar. Perhaps Apple patented the function.... I wish I was joking.

My RAZR HD has an sd card slot, and the battery life is simply amazing!

    In a HD forum? lulz

Still doesn't change the fact that my HD has an sd card slot and exceptional battery life.

I was responding to the DNA post- the one I quoted.
