I see all you guys talking about, and I have no idea what it is..
I don't know if you ever used linux.
But think of rooting as getting admin access to your phone. You can then install apps that require root, flash recovery images, and install custom roms.
Its basically taking over the phone, gives you access to pretty much everything.
What can I do if I root my phone?
Use your phone as a router (tethering - makes your phone a wifi hotspot), custom theme's, pretty much anything you can think of, there's a lot of benefits, search for root apps on android and see whats available I guess.
So if you guys happen to be able to make a rom that will support 2.2 on the ally am I going to have to root my phone?
Yes. Well if someone makes a 2.2 rom then it will probably be rooted anyway.
Ok and will there be like steps or guide I could use to use that rom if its made?
Most likely there will be if its too complicated but it'll still be in shell command form so you gotta learn a little Windows/Linux commands/terminals
i have the doidx w/verizon. Where do i find the step-by-step instructions to root my phone. As of this time, i can't utilize adobe flash because of the op. system on my phone.
Looking in Droid X section might help =/
