Anyone regret upgrading to 2.2 Froyo?

I'm actually more disappointed than I am happy with the update. This is just a minor vent, ignore if you don't want to read.

Let me just say I'm coming from Windows Mobile. Having apps running or not, was a simple thing. With android, why does it have to be an annoyance? I understand Android handles programs in the background well esp Froyo. But why does it have to be a pain, esp for the OCD types, when you close apps you don't want running, they just open themselves again? You can go as far as going into the services, and shutting down that service, not only the app, and have that service restart itself. With 2.1, using Advanced Task Killer, the apps were closed and never really opened again. Unless I lost service or something, which for some reason triggers the internet related apps to open again.

Now I did a hard reset earlier hoping to fix some of the problems I'm having. It didn't really help at all. One problem I'm having is, my Evo NEVER sleeps. Currently synchronized at 0:52:xx Up/Awake times, restarted earlier hoping for change. 2.1, I never had this issue. And after hard resetting, I'd think it would be normal as it is the bare OS itself. Didn't work. Downloaded System Panel lite, forced closed some apps, also from settings-applications. Still same results. 2.1, I had a very good standby time when I wasn't using it.

Some positive things, Flash. Flash is great, only if you have it selected to on demand, otherwise the browser will lag and you'll have tons of flash content thrown at you. The browser seems to be improved. Wifi reception and speed has increased dramatically. Camera app has improved along with the added H.264 codec. Then there's little things like the chrome to phone feature, Facebook comments in gallery, and other things that you'll prob use once in a while.

Text messaging app. In 2.1, I could write out a message, any word I wanted, and with the word selections shown, I was able to still send a text since the button was wider than it is in 2.2, and allowed me. In 2.2, you can't do that. Button is smaller, and word choices completely cover the button. So you HAVE to either push space, a period, or select the word you last typed, even if correct and is in the dictionary, which is another issue btw, only to send the text. Now say you're responding with a smiley, such as ;-), which is in the android smileys option, there's only one word or in this case smiley, so the sent button isn't covered. I push send, I cant. Again, you have to select the smiley, or put a period, or something to get rid of the selection, only to be able to send the text. Why the block now? Very nagging.

Another frustration I'm having is charging. Why the hell does it take my battery 6 hours to move up a couple bars in the battery meter? Again this could be because of my sleep/awake time, which I have no idea why it's doing that. 2.1, my battery only took maybe an hour or 2 tops, to get a full charge.

With 2.2, I noticed its more jerky. Swiping menus and scrolling is more jerky than it is with 2.1. Although games and apps run more smoothly, except the browser, which skips now than it did in 2.1. This could possibly be because of the plethora of apps running in the background, whereas on 2.1 I had them closed out. Another possibility is because of the included flash, as others were saying. Not a big deal for the browser, but using the app drawer and swiping menus is just noticeable enough to make me cringe a bit.

Those are just my main gripes about 2.2/Android. Is there anyone that has similar issues? Or if you did and solved them, can you post the solution. I'd like to have it working flawlessly like it was in 2.1.

How do you switch Flash to on demand? When I go to flash in the app menu, all my buttons are grey and I cant do anything no force close, clear cache, etc. Im referring to Flash 10.1.

Menu -> Settings -> Scroll down to Enable Plugins -> Select On Demand

Not really having any problem you listed. My uptime and awake times are normal. No problems with skipping or jerky screens. I could care less what is running in the background. When I used to use ATK in 2.1 to close things they opened back up just the same way they do now in 2.2. The difference is now I always have a lot more available memory with the same things running. On 2.1 sometimes I would get down to 55MB usually stayed around 80MB, I haven't seen 2.2 go below 110MB free yet. I only run ATK manually and not very often. I type almost all my messages in landscape so I am used to having to do an extra step before sending a message. Also battery charging times are no different for me. If I let it almost completely die takes about 2.5-3 hours like it used to for a full charge.

I will say at times messaging is definitely a bit slower than it was in 2.1. Coming from Winmo 6.5 where if I had more than a few hundred texts on the phone the whole messaging app would freeze up for several minutes, the slight slow down is not enough to bother me to much.

So, ThatNewAndroidGuy, if indeed that is your name....

Surprising - the other night you'd reported that things normalized after losing the Engadget app/widget but it sounds like they're still pear-shaped.

You've got an app that's just not cooperating - it's not froyo per se.

BUT - it might be the Friday build of it.

There were all sorts of statements yesterday, and things got flooded quickly with new froyo-ers so it'll be hard for me to pinpoint - but HTC said this:

If you applied the unofficial EVO update, we are working to get you back on the official track. We will get back to you in the coming days

HTC (htc) on Twitter

And in the discussions yesterday, among the list of HTC concerns between the .3 and the .6 build was that the prerelease and some apps were not playing nice together, to be fixed in the next release.

If true, help is on the way from HTC.

No regrets, waited for the .6 OTA official update, and after the upgrade everything seems to be running just fine. It basically runs exactly like it did, which is how i liked it, but now I have a sweet flashlight app and 10.1 flash. I'll know later how the battery and such is holding up, but so far all is well. If you are using a task killer, you are stuck int he windows mindset and need to let android handle memory itself. Works much better.

Mind my asking.... What is difference between always on and on demands??

After upgraded to 2.2, I think it works well even with LED flashing Handcent...

I wonder if there might be problem when people choice (3G, Wifi, or 4G) instead of Wifi Only before upgrade to 2.2?? I choice Wifi Only... Also, I have my Evo above 90 %... I recalled a while ago ( using Treo 700p) recommend it to be charger above 90% before update software or whatever...

Something that might effect or just Myth??

Froyo added nice features. I love the enhancements to SMS input. The flashligh app is cool and handy.
However, HTC Sense is STILL BUGGY!

1) facebook photo still overwrites photo from phone gallery for contacts REGARDLESS of how many times I set it.

2) Cant view facebook photos OR add comments from gallery on phone

3) Clicking a contacts status update use to navigate to facebook mobile allowing viewing online etc. Not any more with 2.2 - you're stuck in the limiting HTC sense UI.

This is all I have discovered in the last 8 hrs.... stay tuned.

This is great info, thanks.
I am so glad I patiently waited for the official OTA release.
However, I sincerely expected HTC to fix their Sense application. All the BUGS from before this release STILL EXIST. Very annoying.

Thanks for this good post. It is well thought out and explains very well what you are trying to say without being over bearing or obtuse. I know from your other posts around here recently that you seem like a good guy, so I hope people should not get on your case about being too negative about their precious phones and Froyo. After all, it is ok to have a opinion that examines things for what they are. 2 of your observations rang especially true with me.

I have noticed the same issues in the messaging app. It is kinda annoying. I may even go and turn off predictive just to get rid of the little box that lets you choose words that covers the send button. My typing is usually pretty accurate, although the word choice is nice to have sometimes. I also noticed you can long press the word choice box and move it up or down, but when you start a new message it defaults back to standard position blocking the send key again. Even if they could just make it so that it doesn't default back, and we can choose where it sits on our screen it would be a huge improvement even though it is just a minor gripe.

I also notice the jerky-ness, especially on the app tray when you get to the bottom of it. I thought Froyo FOR SURE was going to fix this problem and help make things more fluid than 2.1, but it doesn't seem so. My load out is official OTA Froyo and is as stock and clean as can be (with a factory reset before after each install), and even it has the same clunky feeling for scrolling as 2.1 did. With the processor we have it should be a non issue, especially since Froyo works to make that processor even better and more efficient! My buddy has an HTC Aria, with a 600MhZ processor, and his menus and scrolling is as crisp as can be. It was really surprising the first time I tried it out on his set up. The seemingly underpowered little brother to the Evo, is seemingly running better? (granted it has a smaller display and a lower resolution, but should it make that much difference?) Also, I used a friend of a friends Iphone 4 a few weeks ago and noticed how fluid everything was. It was rather amazing how smooth it felt. It is a small issue, but it is amazing how much effect it can have on the overall experience of the phone. I'm not advocating either of those phones, its just that I noticed on them how much less jittery they felt (Not a whole ton less, but enough to notice).

Overall, obviously I wouldn't go back to 2.1 or switch to a new phone under any circumstances, its just that there are a few SMALL things that are still lacking.
