Getting my 3rd Droid tomorrow

Droid #3 should be arriving either tomorrow or monday. I exchanged my first one due to an echo that i later found out is an issue that will be resolved by the dec 11th update. Now, the phone's still echoing, and the gps doesn't work. if i try to locate myself, it shows that i'm about 1 mile away from my actual location. that tells me that it's using the towers to determine my location instead of the gps. if i turn off the "use wireless networks" it never finds me. did a factory reset and still no resolve. Verizon transfered me to Motorola tech support and they said that there will be an update for the gps available mid December. Verizon called me back and offered to replace the phone again. Why not?

This might be off-topic, but I've seen a couple of people on this forum talk about their GPS being slow in acquiring a position. This is expected behavior especially when you first boot any GPS device in general, because the GPS chip has no idea where the GPS satellites are in the sky. After the first boot, the chip more or less remembers where the satellites should be, so the acquisition is a lot quicker.

Also, GPS reception is pretty bad indoors unless you're near a window. You are communicating with something 10,000 miles+ away in space...

I agree with what everyone here is saying. But either vzw doesn't agree or this is just their way of getting me off the phone. When they replaced my first droid I knew that wasn't the problem. The hardware is there and it is either a software issue or a line issue(echo). HOWEVER.....I believe that a new droid is better than a 2 week old droid and it is so easy to transfer your info on a new phone. Also, if after Dec. 11th, my phone is still echoing and I want a different phone I have a record that something has been wrong since i got the phone. My only regret is having to put on a new screen protector.

My wife and I both have Droids and both have the exact same two problems. I've pretty much ruled out the phones, I doubt both of ours are bad. Anyhow, we get the echo about 20% of the time and the GPS never works accurately ONLY on Latitude. It keeps showing up the nearest tower.

Hopefully the famous "update" will fix it.

I'm not sure if it will affect any of you, but the only time I had a problem acquiring a gps signal is when I am using home++. It just keeps saying acquiring gps but nothing happens. Going back to default android home made it instantly connect. Went back to home ++ and it lost it again. Other than that gps has been great. BTW, home++ is an amazing home replacement. It actually got rid of the lag and jagginess of switching homescreens. If only it added more homescreens it would be perfect, it is in beta and free so I can't care to much about the gps bug. But having smooth transitions on the droid is well worth it. Main point is if at one point something was working and it stops, if u recently installed something try uninstalling it and see if that fixes it.

its working again... its odd that it works some times (like when im standing in the back yard) but others (when i want to go some where new) it doesnt work...

your phone doesn't frustrate you... DROID does.. hahaha oh well if it keeps going in and out i'll be forced to replace it.. oh and thanks for the heads up on that gps status app... it really works well

I don't think people should be piling on those who are returning the phone. I've had serious problems with voice signal. Verizon went right ahead and switched out one phone. I was the one who took the initiative with a higher level tech to open a trouble ticket on the second rather than switch it out again for presumably identical results. Most people don't know enough about how to look in Test Mode and make some diagnoses of their own.

Bottom line, this phone was released prematurely, probably more so than with most phones. This launch reminds me of the Motorola E815, when what ultimately turned out to be a fantastic phone was bedeviled early on by shoddy programming in both firmware and Verizon's network.

Im just saying, smart phones are just too complex for some people thats all. Its obvious it too complex for the OP. Just return the third Droid and get a dumb phone. I have worked in retail (best buy) long ago and I can smell people like this from a 1000 miles away. If you exchange an item for a second time its 100% clear they dont know how to use it or even read the manual. I have seen it 100 times.

I'm not saying that the phone is too complex for me. for the most part i find the phone very easy to use. There are alot of great features on it. I love the UI, the camera, the browser, and even the call quality when it's not echoing. Even without reading the manual I can tell you that there is nothing I can do to fix the echo. Now I don't work at best buy, but I'm guessing that either the phone has a problem, the network has a problem or i'm repeating myself during every phone conversation. Again, replacing the phone has been the solution that the techs at verizon have recommended not me.

Well, that pretty much tells the whole story of the game, doesn't it. Here's a link not to Verizon's web site but to Motorola's. Motorola here has done their job. This is a great piece of hardware for the most part. But Google and Verizon have fallen over their shoelaces on some of the software. They've not only failed to program the phone properly on Verizon's network but they've even failed to provide their customers with proper documentation. I'm one of the lucky ones in a sense. I haven't had reboots, or lost contacts or anything. I've only had two incidents, both with the phone switching itself on, but one was was a hugely embarrassing one, as the phone switched itself on during a job interview. Evidently pressing the power switch and selecting the option for totally switching the phone off is not adequate to keep it turned off. But I've had ongoing problems with the phone's weakness of signal on voice calls, which appears to me to be entirely to do with software and firmware, and not with hardware.
