Discussion about donations?

There's been many times i want to donate, and i figure ill go in and drop a $20 on the developer. But I work for software developers and know how many man-hours go into writing anything! If i was a developer and got $20 i would probably be insulted

I dont really care what others are donating, im just wondering if my $20 is appreciated, or snarled at.

Sorry if this is a stupid thread, just something that sits on my mind every time im about to donate.

I think they appreciate any amount including a "thanks for the hard work on this ROM" comment. That's why it's called "donate"

Seriously donate whatever you feel called to give it doesn't matter the amount and you should not be concerned with it. If a dev ever had an issue with a dollar amount you chose to donate then that is their problem.

First off no one should be doing anything for money. Any person that makes roms/themes/kenrals should be doing it because they want to.

Second I have contributed a few times when something has stood out as going above and beyond. But even than I only leave $5. $20 is alot and can't believe you are asking this.

hate to say it, but it sounds like you are calling attention to your generous gesture. just my $0.02 donation.

Wow this got taken in a surprising direction ... i never expected a 20 to be an overly generous donation lol.

And if i was trying to call attention to it, i would have called out who i sent it to.

I guess it seems like i was way off and had the wrong idea. i was just trying to put myself in the shoes of a developer who spent weeks working on something.

Maybe i should have worded it as "If/when you donate, what dollar amount do you consider" or something along those lines.

Ahh well, just another damn foot in my mouth

Thanks all for the feedback anyhow, i think it has answered my question for the most part.

EDIT, and before its said, no i don't know any of these ROM developers and im not trying to up their donations or something. It was just an honest question with no underlying motives.

I usually get donations ranging from $3-10, occasionally more but most are in that range. Due to PayPal fees, donations <$2 are kind of a bummer since we only get like $1.50 of it, lol..

I've often wondered this myself. What is a normal donation, what is laughed at, what is extreme....

Personally, I've only edited all the files in a framework-res.apk and it took a LONG time (probably because I had no idea what I was doing at the time). What comes off as an insult and what doesn't?

As a WinMo chef I never had a donation link even when asked for one.

I don't however have any problem with the concept. As a matter of fact I have even donated to someone in this thread. I think it was $5 or $10 which I think is reasonable. Anything less is a waste with PayPal loss and more is nice.

Just think of it this way.. $2-3 is like buying someone a coffee. It isn't monetarily significant, but the gesture is appreciated anyway and a good segue into a friendship. $5 can be lunch, $10 is dinner, and so on

Am I the only one who sees something deeply wrong with this statement? Who are you to say what someone's motivation in doing something should be?
