New... Did I make a good choice?

Im sure this has been discussed, but its late here and Im too lazy to search for it.

I just bought a vibrant less than 2 weeks ago, thought and still think its a very good phone. However I see a lot of negative comments regarding lag. Should I have bought the G2? I can still take it back and get a G2 if I wanted to...

Love this phone though, haven't advanced to rooting yet, its my first android so I'm not messing with it yet. Just worried that I bought an inferior phone..

The lag problem is well known at this point. Is it performing well for you? If so, don't worry about it; it really is a great phone.

There are things that can be done to alleviate the lag, some simple, some considerably more involved, notably installing a custom ROM, kernel, lagfix or a combination of these things.

I've customized my phone with a ROM/kernel/lagfix. It flies now. I can tell the difference and am happy to have done it. But such endeavors take a lot of reading and research. If you like to play with your phone, as do I, then it's worth it.

The bottom line is, are you happy with the phone? If so, don't worry about the negative comments. Do you plan to root and perhaps install a custom ROM in the future? Hey, then this phone is for you!

well that's just it, I hear a lot about the lag problem but really I do not notice it. Ran quadrant on it and sure enough it says its running about 901 compared to the G2 which is over 1000. But who knows how accurate that is. If I hadnt randomly came across the issue in a youtube video, I never would have known. It seems to be running very smoothly in fact.

I got the JI6 update yesterday and the GPS seems to be a lot better. Still has some issues while im in building acquiring a signal, but thats understandable.

I've been actively trying to see if I can notice this "lag" and so far I havent found any reason to believe it could be so much slower than the G2.

I've looked at just about every comparison on the web between the two and I still prefer this one over the G2. Ever since I had a sidekick years ago I have been "anti-slidephone" which is the main reason I bought the vibrant. That, and the screen. I am mesmorized by this screen.

It really just seems like the people with the Vibrant prefer it over the G2 and those with the G2 prefer it over the Vibrant. But in the end they are more-or-less equal.

Love the phone, just wish the uneasy feeling went away, spent a lot of money it and there is still no 2.2 update :(

It just said JI6. I assumed it was an update for the GPS. Was it not? I assumed that everyone got it at the same time, but maybe not?

After the update, I noticed a new live wallpaper that shows my GPS location. On the home menu new apps included: latitude, an icon for the navigation, the places app, and a task manager. Also the speech to text key was added to the keyboard, I didnt see it there before.

What I worry about is T-mobiles being slow about releasing the 2.2 update for the 2.1 phones, and now talks of the gingerbread 3.0 update are already starting. Is the Vibrant going to fall behind because of samsung? I dont want this phone to be inferior in a year..

One of the fixes in JI6 was the GPS, but I seem to recall not seeing that on a Samsung website listing the updates, which I thought strange.

About Quardrant scores...forget them. I see people running Bionix, a custom ROM, with a custom lagfix crying about their low Quadrant scores are, yet I know from experience that these phones are far faster than the factory stock phones or phones with the ext2 lagfix.

Don't bother with Quadrant scores; you'll only make yourself crazy. It's how your phone performs that matters.

My phone has always run pretty well. However, after the latest JI6 update this thing has been flying. It's snappy, I haven't experienced much of any lag. Actually thats not true, earlier when I flipped on the GPS it started to slow down, I don't know if this update really fixed my GPS or not, I haven't been able to give it a good test. But anyways, I loves my Vibrant :)

Go to a T-Mobile store yourself, play with the G2. Make your decision on which one you like more yourself. Everyone has preferences and it all comes down to what you like, doesn't matter what everyone else thinks.

Also about the inferior part. The Vibrant is in the top dogs of smart phones right now. However, give a month or two and it along with the G2 will become inferior as well. The rate that phones are advancing is ridiculous. The EVO was a huge technological accomplishment and it's still quite new, and they already have word of the HTC Glacier coming out rumored to be three times as fast. Anything technology based in general will be outdated quite quickly. It's just the name of the game.

One of the great things about this phone is the developer support. It rivals that of the Nexus One. A phone quite frankly has managed to stay ahead of the curve as the iPhone without new hardware because of it's developer support. You made a great choice of phone even if Samsung refuses to support it properly.

The lag is something that will be inherent on any device that becomes underpowered based on the demands of its' software. Near as I can tell so long as you have something accessing the processes of the phone CPU and you run anything else, you'll get lag. The severity of the lag depends on what process the CUP is burning at the time. Case in point, run an animation heavy live wallpaper, download an app from the market, and play Angry birds at the same time. Then quit any 2 of those apps and check your email. Now browse your apps. At some point you're going to hit a bit of a bottle neck. It is a computer after all. If you can look past the mundane issues to what the phone offers, you'll see that it's an amazing device. The fact that you can do all of that on a 1ghz processor is incredible. The screen is awesome, the space capacity is beyond awesome, and if you root it, the sky is the limit.

Up until very recently I've been apprehensive about rooting, now with this phone I really don't see any other way to go along without it. As for custom roms, that's a horse of a different color. If you choose to venture onto that, you're turning a great device into something unworldly. Good luck and you made a great decision.

Here's the thing, HTC and Samsung have some very nice phones, you really can't go wrong either way. I love the Vibrant, with it's SUPERAMOLED screen. The thing is, DON'T get a phone trying to get the best of today because...tomorrow it'll literally be old. Get something you'll like for the next year-two years. Get what FEATURES you LIKE. The Super AMOLED alone sold me on the vibrant and it's powerful specs. It's not 4G, bit it gets near 4G speeds (the same the EVO gets anyways).

Like someone said before, technology advances so rapidly. For example, I didn't get the EVO, but I'm happy. It has some features the Vibrant doesn't have, but not really a huge difference. I looked at my friends evo and the blacks on my phone DESTROYS his (so does the GPU/CPU tests). That's what I like out of the phone.

Even a year from now, many phones still WON'T have that AMOLED display and it will feel pretty good to have something many people still don't have.

For example, the 1st gen iPhone still murders many Android phones just last year. It packed so many features that people were still trying to catch up with it. Find what YOU personally want, not just what is "technically" better of today.. Meaning, don't get a super flawed phone because it's the most advanced phone today and just settle. I would have been pretty steemed if I had gotten the EVO because it was popular to know that in 6 months mines will be really lacking in features. I'm not dissing the EVO, because I was considering it, just sayin'.

A 2005 Lamborghini Gallardo is a LOT better than a $100,000 2012 Lexus.

Go over to the G2 board and read of the problems they are discussing. There will always be negative comments about ANY phone that comes to market. I don't care if it's a perfect phone there will always be critics - that is just human nature.

You have to determine if the device meets your needs, don't let the critics or forum trolls get inside your head. And remember, Quadrant scores while interesting don't necessarily equate to real world performance. When Froyo (2.2) hits the Vibrant it will probably be scoring in excess of 2000+ as shown by people running leaked 2.2.

I've not seen any lag, I'm happy with the Vibrant. It's not perfect, but it's pretty damned nice. It has a bigger screen than the G2 and weighs about half as much. The G2 weighs almost half a pound! No thanks.

I love the large AMOLED display on the Vibrant and that it plays my Divx movies, wmv, mpegs, etc. Plus you can easily read the screen in noon day sunlight. Remarkable!

The real problem with this whole market in general is that the rate of development has become so great, it almost becomes non-viable to support a phone beyond the initial 6 month period where sales are highest. I'm sure Samsung, for example, already had the next gen phone under development before Galaxy S was even released - if not the next two. There is almost too many hardware developers in the field at this point. Competition is a good thing, but the field is so watered down that it is forcing companies to rush instead of refine. Galaxy S being released on all 4 major carriers was a step in the right direction, IMHO, because it allows the hardware manufacturer to consolidate development into a project that will ultimately yield more profit and therefore get more resources assigned. The real hindrance in this scenario is how each of the 4 carriers want to muck around and bog down the hardware with unnecessary software modifications, delaying the update cycle significantly.

All of that said, to the OP I say keep the Galaxy S. It is a great phone with great features and even more potential. As a side bonus, it seems to be nearly impossible to permanently brick it, and so is a great high-tech platform for learning about modding, overclocking, and all sorts of custom software fun.

Awesome feedback guys!

I had nothing to do this morning so I went into the T-Mobile store where I bought my phone and played around with the G2 for a while. And after a good 15 minutes of checking it out, opening and closing aps, web browsing, etc... All this talk about it being so fast wasn't showing itself. In fact, sitting next to eachother in the store, my phone (the vibrant) did just about everything faster. The G2 couldnt lock a GPS signal and my phone did (in a mall). It was pretty much the opposite of everything I have read so far about the Vibrant being laggy. It was the G2 that was jumpy and not smooth, took a long time to open aps and close them. I'm very confused now where all the negativity towards the vibrant comes from. As far as I'm concerned, the only thing the G2 has going for it is the Flash 10.1, but that doesn't make or break a phone. Obviously the Vibrant can still do the same things on the web, not to mention Flash 10.1 is on its way to the Vibrant anyway. The phone was also VERY heavy and I feel like it would pull my pants down if I put it in my pocket. The slide out keyboard was very flimsy and I think that if was open and fell out of hand even once, it would break off. For those who think the keyboard would come in handy, I'm afraid it is just an inconvenience and added weight. The keys are too small to be a convenient alternative to a touch screen. Sadly, even the T-Mobile reps were encouraging me to keep the vibrant. They said that when froyo finally comes for the Vibrant, it would surpass the G2.

What I gathered from this is: The G2 was hyped up to be the ultimate superphone, but now after being out on the market for almost 2 weeks, it isn't so great anymore. When the people at T-Mobile are telling me to keep the Vibrant, I think that's a sign. And it has nothing to do with revenue either, because they wouldn't benefit at all from me keeping the vibrant or getting a G2. I'm assuming there have been plenty of complaints with the G2 by this point that perhaps its not as good as everyone thought it was going to be?

Had a good convo with the sales rep there, and we both agreed that since the Galaxy S is offered through multiple service providers, Samsung would take a HUGE hit if they failed to update to froyo and make the mistake they did with the Behold. As of right now the Galaxy is in, in fact, the largest money maker for Samsung, so if they drop the ball this time and everyone returns their phones or sells them. Return customers will be non-existent. For this reason, I am going to wait it out for the Froyo release They told me it should be the end of november and that it is already being testing on the captivate (which will likely get the update before the Vibrant). A month and a half isn't too long of a wait.

Either way, as you guys say, technology advances so fast that by this time next year, the Vibrant will be obsolete when it comes to hardware inside the phone, but since it's open-source it will probably be able to keep up with advancements in software.

I don't plan on rooting it because I don't need the headaches when it finally comes time for Froyo, and right now, the phone isn't lagging at all and it outperforms all my friends' phones (droid X, captivate, Evo, and HD2), so I'm very satisfied. When it comes down to it, I think the numbers and tech specs should be acknowledged, but not used to compare the phones. The only way to determine which phone is actually better is to have them both next to eachother, in a natural setting (one you would find yourself in every day) and run them both through normal phone things such as texting, web browsing, videos, etc. Doing this, in the town that I live in, where I spend most of my time, it was clear that the Vibrant was better for me.

Going off topic a little bit, I have had the T-Mobile screen protector on the phone and I notice that it kinda takes away from the beauty of the screena and it scratches easily. I stopped by the Zagg Invisible Shield booth in the shopping mall and the guy that worked there had a Vibrant with the protector on it. It definitely doesn't blur the screen as much and it covers the whole face rather than just the screen itself. But $16 for one protector seemed a little steep.. He said it had a lifetime warranty, so if it comes off or gets scraped/scratched I can "just bring it back in and have a new one put on for $5"... Doesnt really seem like a lifetime warranty to me.... Sorry for subject change but I thought I'd throw that out there, what is everyone using for screen protectors?

I did the same thing at the Tmobile store and came to the same conclusion. The hype about the G2 is much ado about nothing! And it cannot tether and weighs almost DOUBLE the weight of the Vibrant which means that due to weight and thickness I wouldn't be able to drop it into my shirt pocket without having my shirt sag to my waist. Also, the display doesn't show up as well in bright light which means outdoors, at high noon, the screen will be seriouly handicapped. Not to mention that the "Z-hinge" is a failure waiting to happen.

The consensus on screen protectors around here pretty much centered on the Realook which doesn't distort the gorgeous Super AMOLED, is very reasonably priced (2 for $10.99), and is easy to apply. Amazon.com: REALOOK T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant Crystal Clear Premium LCD Screen Protector 2 Pack: Electronics

Glad to hear you are happy with your Vibrant and the doubts have evaporated. Kind of like shadows, when you shine the light of the truth on them they just disappear. ;)

Edit: One minor point, I don't think the Vibrant will be necessarily "obsolete in a year." "Obsolete" is a bit of a stretch. For that to happen there would have to be some major technological leap forward in features or function. Even dual core processors won't accomplish that. However, I'm sure it won't at the top of the heap in a year. But no device ever will be able to remain at the top for very long at the rate technology improves - especially in the Android arena. All we can do is buy what suits us in the moment realizing we will be upgrading as needed. Just don't confuse "need" with "want," you may want the fastest phone on the planet, but do you really need it a year from now? Time and personal preferences will tell.

Well perhaps obsolete was the wrong word, but as someone on this forum out it early, its like the law of diminishing returns. Every extra boost a phone gets is going to be less of a leap from the previous phone. Technology on cell phones can only advance at a certain pace. So yes, the Vibrant will still be one of the top phones a year from now.

They said that when froyo finally comes for the Vibrant, it would surpass the G2.

As an ex-EVO owner, reading all the hand-wringing about Froyo not being here is amusing nostalgia. I remember the EVO forums just going apeshit that the Nexus One got 2.2 but the EVO didn't. Well, when it finally arrived it was much ado about nothing. The JIT compiler added a little response to the phone, but outside of synthetic benchmarking, didn't make much of a difference in everyday usage. The promise of Flash 10.1 on mobile is something to take with a grain of salt. 99% of Flash apps out there are not written for mobile device limitations (screens, inputs, UIs, etc) and work terribly. Sure, its nice to have in a pinch, but its not at all how some people think it is, specifically, that its going to run Flash just like on the desktop.

2.1 and 2.2 are not that different. If people are thinking of getting the G2 solely because it has 2.2 already then they're really not going to be very impressed by the difference.

I think the best thing about the Vibrant (all Galaxy S phones, really) are all the little features you discover that weren't necessarily advertised or touted. Things that when I discovered them, made me go, "Holy shit, that's amazing!"

Things like...

  • Galaxy S phones support these video codecs: mpeg4, H.264, H.263,Sorenson codec, DivX HD/ XviD, VC-1,
these video formats: 3GP (MPEG-4), WMV (Advanced Systems Format), AVI (divx), MKV, FLV,
and these audio formats: FLAC, WAV, Vorbis, MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, MID, AC3, XMF
  • Video out on the Vibrant through the 3.5mm jack, just plain sick!
  • The equalizer and general level of polish in the stock music player
  • The camera is just plain awesome, even without a flash. Excellent color reproduction, tap-to-focus, anti-shake, etc. And honestly, the only good a phone camera flash has is the ability to be used as a flashlight.
  • On that note, the camcorder is awesome as well. What I didn't know before buying was that the camcorder actually records audio that doesn't sound like it came straight out of a phone call. And it's beautiful quality at 720p.
  • Aside from the TouchWiz Launcher (which I've humbly replaced with LauncherPro Plus), the overall polish of the TouchWiz UI (like in the dialer, contacts, notification bar (shortcuts to toggles and music player controls!)) is amazing.

There's probably a lot I left out, but the point is that this is a smash-hit phone, packed with too many features to even advertise. The fact that it still makes me say "wow" everytime I use it (I don't even have a lag fix at the moment, I'm still waiting on JI6 so I have it disabled in the meantime) is a testament to my satisfaction with it.

Yes, you made an amazing choice.
