X10 2.1 Update - Discoveries

anyone else with this issue? i havnt updated yet, but my battery already sucks the juice back compared to my old iphone 3g.:(
the first day i had 2.1 i would have said my battery lasted longer, and i used my phone a lot more.
the live wallpapers can drain the juice a little more or maybe its just if something new has been added to drain power but overall i would say its the same if not better.

Did anyone mention that there is a second widget called Status Switch. This has the original Silent/Vibrate/Ring option on it. And re: brightness, When I tap the brightness toggle on the Power Control Widget, it does have a very bright setting. Seems to be great for me. Albeit, I do miss the auto brightness control.

As well, if you have a Google account, you no longer need to enter login info for Google Talk, Latitude and email separately. Entered during setup, and everything else is setup automatically.

I use the Android keyboard on my X10, and in 2.1 it often defaults to words and names from your contact list, making fast 'typing-without-thinking' almost impossible.

However, I've discovered that if you press and hold the unhighlighted (i.e black rather than red) suggestion, it will now 'save' that word for next time. It's certainly time consuming, but I imagine after a couple of weeks of this, most irregularities of the new auto suggestion will be ironed out.

i just installed the free version of another swype program, slideit is the name. i was a little hesitant at first but OMG its awsome. its sooooo fast and even when using the keyboard in its normal function without swyping it seems more accurate. i would say that i am typing atleast twice as fast. some words that i really didnt think it would get it nailed em right on. even if i get my liquid e i think that ill pay the $8 for the full version.

When you are on the Phonebook, press Menu, then press update status, and when you update your status, it displays ...via Sony Ericsson X10 As shown in the image below :)

You can also do it in timescape :)

Mine did this on 1.6.

For anyone wondering, I've got 2.1 on Vodafone uk. If you don't have it yet, go to SE, download the update for PC companion first.

Edit: Sorry, didn't realise that had already been answered when I clicked on the quote button!

As for led colour, I change it on handcent, like I did with 2.1. I also use Twicca for twitter which allows the change of colour. I now have green for calls/email, white for text (though might change this as pingchat uses white) and purple for Tweets. Also, anyone else get a dull orange colour for charging?

Oh, and I totally love Live wallpapers. Found some pretty cool free ones through app brain. Eat that Apple!

Also, for texts, as well as using handcent, I use shapewriter instead of the "hunt n pick" style keyboard. This is no longer available on the market, but if anyone wants it, feel free to pm me for it.

well I agree with you , everything has improved and 2.1 has bring lots of good things to x10 , i miss a few sweet things from 1.6, maybe i need to enable them as the icon with 4 arrows in the left down corner in browser has gone it was for zooming a part of the page and then go zoom there , i use it to scroll page down or up faste. I really miss that feature from donut i use it in dolphin browser and now in browser and dolphin b. is losed. any advise?

I noticed that too. It seems the text is much smaller in this browser than the default setting of the previous one. I found that if you double tap (tap twice) on the screen, it will zoom in for you. Also, noticed that they removed the Exit function in the Menu of the Browser as well. Kind of annoying but I can get past that.

ditto on the exit function on the Browser. If I have a few windows open I use the menu key, show windows and then X them and then backspace to exit browser. Either that or leave it running in the background. Somewhat of a pain but I hate leaving things running.

Cheers

It's actually not running but becomes 'idle' in the background. That is, it's not using resource (CPU) but it's just sitting in memory.

Two things:
The insert smiley is not gone: just do a long press on the 12!? button of the stock keyboard and a smiley menu pop out all graphic.

And the other thing i found out is that the power button no longer hangs up the phone.

Finally i'll go for a third one:

When you have the headset the phone no longer rings out loud, instead it rings in the headphone. It used to have that one early 1.6 release but was gone with 020

I updated 2.1 only recently and am still kind of lost on the new menus. Where do you turn the 3G off?? Or are you using a widget?? Thanks and sorry for the noob questions.

You can turn off 3G by going to Settings>Wireless & networks> Mobile networks and then uncheck the box next to Data traffic. There's another option called Network mode that allows you to select only GSM and that will do the same thing. Though if you're on Rogers, your only option is the Data traffic one as they have disabled the selection of Network mode. Hope this helps!

Does the add smiley in Handcent SMS still work in 2.1? It's the plus sign next to the text input box when texting.

It'll probably work the same for Handcent because I was referring to the build in message app, when you press the menu button there was an option to insert smileys. In 2.1 now there's only edit recepients options.

The insert smiley is not gone: just do a long press on the 12!? button of the stock keyboard and a smiley menu pop out all graphic.
The thing is that i switch between a Chinese ime keyboard and the android one, and whenever i need a smiley i just press menu and have the shortcut there.
But I was surprised by the new look of the Default keyboard, cause in 1.6 it was hard to use and I never would've open it if you never pointed it out to me. With the new look and all (which is kinda nice i think, much better than in 1.6 ) guess i can just switch to this, or just download handcent.

Another thing is Timescape, we can use to set it as our Home in 1.6, but now that seems to be gone for good? they didn't bother to improve its performance, which is kind of a shame really. if it wasn't lagging so much i would have considered leaving my home like that, instead of the standard android feel.
