Root rooting question/assistance request

Hi.
I tried to root after the recent update and was unable to.

Before the fix arrives and I root my phone... I need clarification or assistance. Make sure rooting is for me...

Reason for rooting: I want to get rid of the crap I don't use on the phone, but I still need it to make calls, download pdf and doc files, and some of the other basic stuff. Mostly my phone is used for phone purposes and as a spare drive for files. I just want more room, a cleaner app list of MY apps, etc.

So, I guess I can root to take off the 'bloatware'? Do I need a custom ROM for this after I root? Can I turn s-on after (not exactly sure what it does)?
Does the phone do all the same things after rooting?

I've searched but my questions haven't been answered or if they have been, I'm not up with electronics and terminology... I'm a chemist.

I just rooted my phone using the unrevoked tool. I now have superuser status. Reading about removing bloatware now. Completely stock incredible with the nov update and unrevoked root today.
Seems each app may have a special procedure to remove? I need titanium backup or nandroid?
Main point of this reply is to thank you all for the assistance and to get step by step for one app removal (facebook or skype). Then I can do the rest with reading more in the forums.
Thanks!

I just went ahead and got the Titanium Pro, backed up the system, and started to freeze apps. After all the reading about deleting apps and having problems, I went with the Titanium 'freeze' route.
Amazon MP3 widget still hangs around even though I froze the app. Any ideas how to remove the widget?
One more question.... Titanium saved a copy of my back up on my SD card. How to I transfer that to my laptop to save it- just in case? Do I take the SD card out and hook it up to my computer? Or can I just hook my phone up (I tried to hook up the phone but never found the files on the SD card)?
Now that I'm rooted, is tethering free (I'm too poor to pay verizon for that option, didn't know if there was a free way).
Again, Thanks for all the help. I almost cried from joy as I was freezing apps and removing them from the menu. I hate that stuff, I love you guys.

there is a titanium folder on your sd card, that has your backups in it.
