Why not do it on the phone

I've been wondering why the instructions for installing anything that isn't on the market tell you to connect your droid to your computer and use the terminal? That's absolutely unnessary. Is it a ploy to scare people off?

When I first got the droid, I plugged it in to the computer to move a bunch of music, but haven't plugged it in but once or twice. I've found that most everything can be done from the phone, including rooting, updating roms, installing non-market apps, etc.

Why do the howtos for everything tell me to do it from the computer?

Maybe I'm missing something...

It isn't unnecessary ... nor is it necessary. Either works, so whatever. I use whatever tool is available to me at that moment. Then again, I'm an IT geek. I've been downloading since 300 baud modems. Some people (and I'm guessing it's the majority) would rather download software on their PC. The PC is much more familiar to them.

Not sure why the rant though. If anything, these lame instructions to use your PC should make you feel superior knowing that "there's a better way". ;)

I turn it into this:

Download the file
Terminal
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
busybox cp /system/app/YouTube.odex /system/app/YouTube.obak
busybox cp /sdcard/download/YouTube.odex /system/app/YouTube.odex
mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
sync

And I use Root Explorer and don't have to open my Terminal Emulator and type a single thing. Ain't options great?

True, not unnessary. And wasn't trying to rant, just seemed like all the directions take me the long way;)

And I'm jealous about the 300 baud modem, first one I got was 2400:)

Also remember the 300 baud days. My bro ran a BBS out of the house off an Apple IIe w/ a 10MB external hard drive. The hard drive cost like $300 and was in a box the size of a stereo receiver. That IIe went to college w/ me. Finally getting a 56k modem felt like getting broadband back then.
