Uh....not going to speak to the software design because I don't know...you could potentially hold up a picture of a monkey and have it set to match it. But as to the hardware design and how a camera works...if you put your thumb over the camera lens, there won't be enough light to take a picture. If you hold it far enough away, it simply will not be able to retain enough detail to match the clearly see the pattern your fingerprint lines make, so.....in short, no it will not recognize your one and only thumb per se. But like I said, I can't speak to the software, but it could potentially recognize A thumb in general.

I can probably chip in here a bit more since I have a passing familiarity with computer vision applications. Short answer is no, the algorithm is tweaked to only recognize a limited set of facial features. It's a shortcut they took to get computer vision working on limited hardware.

The algorithm will be looking for certain facial features such as eyes, cheek bones, nose, etc. It'll be pretty good at locating these features, and checking their spacial relationship to each other (quick and dirty measurements).

Since your thumbs likely lacks eyes, cheek bones, and a nose (one would hope), it wouldn't be able to recognize an image of your thumbs. It's not a general computer vision pattern recognition system.

See HanS - I'm not the only one. And if you are involved in this thread you are not old and behind the times. (And anyone who has a piper crossing sign would be forgiven, in my book, for being old and behind the times if it were true)

Yeah yeah. I know. But it was worth the thought being put out there.

Thank you! :) I just got alot of looks from my co-workers as I literally burst out with a good natured laugh from your comments! :):)

The only reason I would stick with LPP is for the swipe action on the dock icons. I am definitely going to root the phone though - ROMs are another story for now. Stock launcher is the way for me right now.

I wonder if Messaging supports Emoji like GoSMS does -- its fun to have Emoji chats with iPhone people.

Doesn't that sound like the "Dinara" that was floating around before?

Figures.

Similar -- that was my first thought.

My sister texted back:

This is getting exciting!!

Not saying I know anything but there was talk of a web only launch. Maybe it will go live or pre order status on the 17th or 18th web only. Then on the 21st store shelves get stacked! Just wishful thinking.

Been busy at the new house so I will check in later!

You think this phone will be discounted if you wait a week more to Cyber Monday (if it were released on the 21st that is)? Then again, I guess you risk the demand being so high that you have to be put on a backorder list if you wait. I doubt if the RAZR stayed in stock for the most part though, the Gnex wouldn't. Even the Razr is $189.99 on Amazon now for upgrading the account. With the Razr expected to be the flagship for Verizon, I'm thinking going into the holiday season we can see a drop within a week at a great price? As much as I hate my OG Droid and can't wait for this release I may try and test my patience and wait another week.

I'm going to hold off as long as I can while everyone around me is gloating and reveling in their new toy. Plus, this way I get to see how the battery life is and find out about any bugs. It will be difficult...to be sure...

Aw, who am I kidding. I'm buying it on release day.

Haha, I hear ya. I'll likely buy on release day too. I don't have much patience, and the little I do has been tested already with this wait.

I wonder if there will legitimately be a discount after only ONE WEEK, like the RAZR. Didn't it release at $299, only to be sold for $199 now?

That's ridiculous. I mean, I'm certainly not scrounging for cash to buy this baby, but if waiting 1 week will save me $100.... that's what I'll try to do

The only reason I would stick with LPP is for the swipe action on the dock icons.

+1. I use those swipe actions all the time for

-Notification tray (useful especially if you have small hands--you don't have to drag it down from the top)

-Bookmarks pop-up (LPP)

-Screen previews (instead of pinching to zoom)

-Activating Vlingo's listening activity

Some of these things will be alleviated by the ability to put folders into the dock, but you can't beat being able to dictate custom activities.

Not being able to remove the Google search box is highly annoying. I never use it and it's pointless for me. I guess I've just got my first reason to root.

I've also decided on a name for my GNex: "Jupiter's". If you don't get it, don't worry you probably don't want to. If you do get it then I hope the Nexus brings honor to this ludus, dominus.
How did you root your old Android devices to get rid of the search capacitave/hardware button?

i'm on an Incredible and my hardware button is still there and works. I just dont ever touch it. Everyone is talking about the Google Search Bar that is on our phones when you have it stock and powered up for the first time.
