Hey guys, I am a long time reader first time poster on this forum,

I have a question regarding android updates. I have a HTC Desire Z running android 2.3. The thing is I bought it at one carrier, but I am using a different one. This carrier I am using now is a very cheap sim-only carrier that doesn't sell or provide phones, so its not "pushing" (I don't know if its called like that) android updates.

I didn't really care before as my phone is working fine, but now I realize HTSsense.com has shut down and we are supposed to start using google play. This is exactly my problem, my android market hasn't updated to google play yet, is there any way I can get official HTC updates if my carrier is not providing them?

Thanks in advance!

Hi vvans, and welcome to AF.

Actually the "Play Store" app is not very different to the "Market" app, so you aren't actually missing much if anything. I'm still surprised that it hasn't updated, as that's just an app update, and is pushed by Google rather than by HTC or the network.

For advice on software updates for the Desire Z in particular, I'd recommend visiting the device forum: HTC Desire Z - Android Forums

those seem like 2 different questions to me.

you can get the apk files needed for google play to work, i believe it's vending.apk and another one, and flash it to your system directory.

i change my lcd density, and use lcd density pro to flash a google play store that fakes the original resolution. the app would work without changing density and it makes it easy to install the latest version of google play store.

to get official HTC updates, i'm sure there's leaks you could flash. for example i flashed an OTA of android 4.0.4, so I got the OTA update without my carrier pushing it to my phone.

just throwing out some ideas

Thank you for your replies!

Man! First I didn't care about not having the updates, but yesterday I played with a Desire Z from a friend of mine and my Desire Z just looks like its running windows 95 compared to his. He has 5 fancy, floating buttons on the bottom of the home screen, with the one going to all the apps in the middle, while I am stuck with my prehistoric 2.3 Sense with the "curvy metal thing(apps + phone + personalize)" buttons.

How do I find a leaked official update that I can flash to my phone? And what does flash mean :p? Im just quoting from Mistermojorizi. Also, what does OTA mean..?

Thank you all!
