Can I use my phone with no plan, while on WIFI?

I will be deploying, and will suspend my account while gone. My location where I will be has WIFI. Can I connect to the WIFI and still text? If so, how would I go about doing this. Really appreciate any input and assistance.

Yes you can. Set up google voice and use that for texting over wifi.

Once you have Google voice set up, you can even make calls over wifi with no phone plan if you want, just install and set up GrooveIP app also.

You may want to download and install the free MySMS app. Works worldwide. Also works via WiFi. Even without a phone!

It should work fine if set up from inside the US. After that it is no different than checking Gmail from a computer outside the US. It is just shorter messages (SMS as opposed to email). It is the same way messaging using Google Voice does not require a SMS plan, only data.

Also the calls using GrooveIP is just a way of doing VOIP. The call is actually routed to GoogleTalk (IM service) and GrooveIP just access that and simulates it as a phone call.
