Help Galaxy S2 Issues with Kies (another one, I know)

Okay so I know there are a fair few threads about this on here already but none of the solutions seem to work so I thought I would try my luck by describing my issue exactly!

When I connect my (new) Samsung Galaxy S2 to my computer with Kies (version 2.3.2.12054_20) running on it, it doesn't connect. When I first plug it in it says "MTP Initialisation" then "MTP Completed" and nothing happens on my computer.

When I go "Settings-->Wireless and Network-->USB Utilities-->Connect Storage to PC" then connect my cable, Kies says 'Connecting' but then comes up with the dreaded:

Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode.
Current connection mode not supported by Kies. Check the USB setings"​

I have looked up other solutions but they don't seem to solve the issue:
USB debugging is unchecked.
I have tried taking out the SD card - same issue.
Restarted and reinstalled everything in every permutation...

Any other suggestions (for a non technical person)? - I just want ICS on my Galaxy S2!

When connecting to Kies, you don't need to use the storage mode. Just switch on Kies in the PC and connect the USB cable after that.

I think it will work for you since you actually do get the MTP connection connected, meaning the drivers are there.
