Let's talk cases for the HTC EVO 3D.Tips

Last Updated:

  1. I use Boxwave screen protectors as well. Their screen protector is considered #1 in the industry and it will cover the screen and capacitive buttons on the EVO. Also, if it gets to oily, just rinse it off and shake it dry. Then it will stick right back to the screen. I always get the anti-glare screen protector which allows me to view the screen in the glare of the hot Texas sun.

Alright folks, here's you all should know about screen protectors:

    1) Why you'd want to consider a screen protector (or the risks of going bare):

It's fairly well known that the Evo 3D will be using Corning Gorilla Glass, and I'm sure many of you have seen videos where people have hammered away at Gorilla Glass screens with pens and rubbed all manner of keys, razor blades, etc. against them. But, the videos are worthless.

Gorilla Glass is great and is an improvement over other glass, tempered or otherwise in terms of strength and scratch resistance, but it is not the be-all end-all to scratch problems and many, many, many Gorilla Glass devices have been known to be scratched.

If you recall from grade school Earth Science, glass is known to have a hardness of anywhere from ~5.5-7ish on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness (which is a scratch test ranking of minerals). Let's assume that Gorilla Glass, because of its improved temper process, is at the far end of that scale -- 7 to 7.5. This means that Gorilla Glass will be scratch proof to most soft metals (iron, copper, nickel, lead, gold, and most types of unhardened steel), plastic, and harsh language. So your keys, razor blades, and paper clips are likely not to scratch the screen.

This however does not comprise the entire universe of things that will come into contact with the screen. What commonly occurring substance will still scratch the screen with ease? SAND. Sand is made of small bits of silica minerals like quartz, and small grains of other hard minnerals, all of which with hardness of 7 and up. These will easily scratch the screen with the slightest bit of effort. Furthermore, it's not unusual for sand and other debris to be caught in the pockets of jeans during the stone washing process (I know I've had to wash jeans with the pockets inside out several times to rid some of them of all the grit and sand), and just stuffing a bare phone into a jeans pocket and subject it to scratching risk.

The videos are fairly silly because I'm fairly confident that with your average glass -- say a window pane, windshield, etc., these things would effectively resist scratching by keys, razor blades, plastic pens, etc. just as well as Gorilla Glass. (Also note that the impact part of it is silly -- how "hard" you try to scratch a surface really plays no role in whether you can or not). When our keys would scratch something, like our older ipods or older cell phones, it's because the screens they used were made of plastic, which is extremely soft -- maybe 3 or 4 at best on the Mohs scale.

Now that most if not all large touchscreen devices have switched to glass in general (the Palm Pre was the last major touchscreen device I know of to use plastic), there is already a significant improvement in scratch resistance, and Gorilla Glass adds a bit more.

Screen protectors are certainly a matter of personal preference, and with Gorilla Glass, we've come a far way in terms of scratch resistance -- enough such that I don't think it's reckless to go without a screen protector. However, it's a matter of managing risk, because there is still a risk your screen can get scratched. At least for me, I'd rather replace a screen protector than an entire screen or worse, live with an imperfection on the screen itself for the lifetime of the device.

NEXT -- the different kinds of screen protectors and why, and their advantages/disadvantages.

Thank me if you found this useful.

I can't wait for Boxwave to make their screen protectors but I always end up with them. I just bought the clarivue ones mentioned at the beginning of the thread just so I can have some protection so when Boxwave makes theirs I always end up with those on. They always fit exactly on the screen too.

Now I want a case. Can't decide if I want a case, a case with a kickstand, or actually go with a pouch with belt holster.

I can't do any protector besides Invisishield anymore. Did Boxwave, tried a few others. I just prefer the feel of the invisishield.
  5. Who cares about gorilla glass? The EVO 4G has gorilla glass on it and the glass will still scratch and break. Unless you make a phone out of the glass used on bullet proof windows the glass on any phone will scratch or break.

I have put a Seido Innocase II and an Invishield on the screen. The case is a little to aggressive, it left some wear marks on the sides and ate up the corners of the screen protector. With that said the protection is fantastic. I am very rough with my phone and it still looks new.
  7. I had an Innocase ll but I cracked it and ordered an Innocase Active. The active case is the way to go for the 3VO. And if you like changing things up, Seidio makes white cases that look great on the EVO.

So I got the Nillkin in the mail last night. I was pretty impressed with the thickness and feel and the faceplate. Also a screen protector came with it as a surprise. I ordered a separate protector made by Nillkin also so I wonder how they compare. I would hope the one I spent $4 on would be better than the one that comes with the protector but they are pretty similar in texture. I will find out after I get the EVO 3D.

I do want to note that I would preferred the top and the bottom of the faceplate to cover a little bit more than that but I'll see how I fare with it and decide if I will order something else.

I also ordered a bunch of backup batteries from Ebay that are showing up and a universal car dock/charger from Obostore after I get the Nillkin as I feel more safe with them now that I got a product with them.

Couldn't figure out how to link the photos directly on this site so just attached the link to my album. Anyone want to teach me how to link Picasa pictures to the forum? Thanks.

No case for me. These things are already too bulky.

The OtterBox cases are legit. I have the Defender Series of the case for the EVO 4G It came with a kick stand on it. it is very flimsy though, I barely use it.

I think the best bet for a kickstand case is the HTC version. From the pictures, it looks like a robust case and they obviously went the extra mile with stability with the size of the kickstand, itself. The one thing that bugs me a little is that it looks like the case does not fully envelope the lower edge of the phone. It my be the poor angle of the picture, that that did catch my eye. Has anyone else found more pictures of the HTC version kickstand case?

I messed up my Innocase II also and got the active my favorite case yet. I love the feel of the phone in my hand and I just love the case. My phone fell out of my lap as I was getting out of the car and chipped some purple paint off the side of the case and phone was fine. I also had a Clarivue screen protector and I already got my Clarivue now for my 3D. I hope Seidio makes there cases pretty quick for the 3D. I also like the Casemate Pop that there making with a kickstand and the HTC kickstand case. But I wish Siedio would make an Innocase Active with a kickstand that would be awesome. I need to have a case before I get the phone.

so my question is, do either of the boxwave or invisishield release the same day as the phone? i rather get a screen protector on it the very first time i use it so i don't have to deal with cleaning the screen and making sure there isn't dust.

What were the gel/silicone cases like for the OG Evo?

The standard gel cases are fine in my opinion, the only issue with them I have noticed is that after a period of time they start to fit a little loose. So I won't do gel/silicone cases anymore, I would rather go for a tpu case. They fit better and are more durable and protect better in case of a drop.

Looks like Surface is getting a kickstand but Active is not (yet, at least). Kinda sucks since the kickstand is nice to have when you want/need it, but I rarely use it.

In any case, with my EVO 4G a Seidio case + Ultimate Screen Guard has been a winning combination. The Seidio case doesn't add much bulk and the USG makes you forget that you're even using a screen protector.

The 3VO inside of that, is going to be like carrying around a Garmin GPS in your pocket. no thanks. I will get a TPU case instead.

What's the texture of TPU? Grippy or slick? Hard or soft?

I don't need the combo with the holster. And the active only list black but I do love the active case I have now. But I dropped it once and purple paint chipped off and you see black so maybe black is good. I want this one casemate pop kickstand case I have been seeing or I may end up liking the HTC one. I bet I end up with a couple cases. Gonna order extra batteries off ebay too.

Its hard, and I would say its right between slick and grippy.
