Root MILESTONE 2.1 update and root guide

Thank you for the great tutorial!

When I try to run the update.zip recovery I get this output:

E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...
cannot find update_binary
Rooting your phone...

Install from sdcard complete.

Then after I reboot Titanium backup cannot get root. So any ideas to why?

I'll do the whole thing again to be sure. :)

The first flash of the 2.1 SBF always needs my help to power up. And after I connect the USB again it's finished in 1 second. Makes me wonder if I get a false Finished/PASS status. Is there any way to check this? Any particular properties of the phone to check/look for?

The second flash of the recovery SBF always manage to power up the phone on its own.

And the root update still fails like described in the earlier post.

It doesn't fail. I had the same output as you.

I bought my Milestone in China and due to language issues I feel its time to root this thing.

Downloading the pre-reqs as I'm typing but want to confirm some details before I jump off this cliff.

I'm not sure which SBF to pick and whether or not it will work here (china).
I assume thats to do with the Band the phone will use.

And its a bit worrying that the Build # I have now doesnt show up on
motorola_milestone:sbf [And Developers]

So heres the details from my settings--------------------------

Firmware Version:
2.0.1

Baseband version:
3GSMEPU91A_U_91.08.12I

Kernel Version:
2.6.29-omap1rkg683@ca25rhe76#1

Build Number:
Hiapk_1.0_SHOLS_google

---------------------------

I'm thinking of installing the UK 2.1 SBF (SHOLS_U2_02.31.0)
if I lose 3G thats not a huge issue as you have to pay an arm and a leg for it in China.

It all depends on the language and the band. Where are you using it? What language do you want?

I'm using it in China, over the CHina Mobile Carrier.

I'd like the interface to be in English
(right now most of the menus are english, but some things are not)

If I am right, the baud rate you are using is 900 / 2100. You should be fine flashing a UK 2.1 SBF.

I recommend making a nandroid backup first though.

Ahhh, my favorite word "should", I hear it so often over here.
Would it be better if if picked the Central Europe SDF?

Will definitly make a nandroid backup before jumping.

Thanks for the help, Ill let you know how it goes

No, they are pretty much the same - it's just the keyboard layout you have to really worry about.

The reason people say should is because we don't want to say it WILL work and then you end up breaking the phone, although unlikely - you never know.

Thanks for the clarification,
My comment was a poorly delivered joke to related to living/working in China.

I'll have a go with the UK SDF file and see what happens tonight.
And If I manage to screw it up, well, I only have myself to blame.

It's highly unlikely that something will go wrong. As long as you aren't flashing the bootloader (which you aren't), you are pretty safe.

Bugger it,

I've got everything dloaded and now trying to get the SDK pack (android-sdk_r05-windows.zip), but the great Firewall is blocking my access to (Download the Android SDK | Android Developers)

Can someone please upload this file to rapidshare??

Id rather not embark on this journey until I have a backup....

Wow... they block access to free software? Sort of makes sense though... I will gladly break China's laws by uploading it elsewhere - because, like Google, I don't agree with blocking freedom of speech.

I'll up the link in a sec.
