As a self-acknowledged hater of all things micro$oft--and strictly a Linux user, of course!--I can't recommend ANYTHING from m$. So let's move on...

I'm a die-hard *buntu user--but not Ubuntu. I prefer Kubuntu, which is Ubuntu with KDE as its desktop environment, instead of GNOME...Unity...whatever the hell they're slapping on Ubuntu now. KDE is so beautiful and so versatile, and so customizable. That's my favorite part. :) I posted a couple of screenshots in the Let's see your desktop thread; they're from the laptop I'm typing this on.

If you'd like to be a bit more specific about what you're looking for in an OS, along with what type of laptop you're talking about, it'd be easier to give recommendations. There are many Linux distros outside of *buntu that might be better for you.
