Help Sprint: Android 2.1 coming to Moment first half of next year

The GPS thing is def an issue for me. And by issue, I mean it doesn't work 90% of the time (trying all of the recommended methods).
I saw today that I actually left the Google track my location thing on-- it sent me an email with a link. Look how much I've traveled in 2 weeks!
But really, I haven't left soCal.
I liked Fiji the most.

GetAround.jpg

I thought decalex's post was funny until now. Anybody check their bills? My latest has 3 "international texts" they are charging me for. Since I haven't traveled outside the US, and nothing has shown up in my inbox that I don't recognize, I'm assuming it is when my phone decided it was also going globe hopping using Agps.

I sent an email to CS to see if they would remove them, waiting for a reply.

I have a Samsung Moment that has Android 1.5 which doesn't work with Agps, but it is built into the phone. So now I have 3 international text message charges on my Account: xxxxx, Phone # xxxxxxxxxx. Please remove the charges and send me an email confirming this. Also please remove any more that show up because the phone thinks it is in England, Maldives, or Russia whenever it is indoors. I'm definitely not jumping around the planet that quickly. You really need to upgrade the software on these phones to 1.6 or 2.0. Please let the managers know this is pissing off customers. Read the Forums.

Well I think the confusion is that the warning screen pops up, saying less than 15% of the battery remains, so I think that's why people refer to it as 15%.

I don't think it's down to 5%. It just says less than 15%, which could be 14.99, so the start of the screen dimming/keyboard lights out might as well be 15.

Agreed. This is the real issue with the battery indicator.

I could care less if the phone ran all day saying it had 5% power. What I care about is that you lose alot of functionality when it gets to this point.

Really all they should need to do for a temporary fix is just allow us to adjust it so that even though the battery indicator says it's below 15% just let us use all the features however we want to until the phone dies. Then we'd still get full use out of the battery/phone at least.

They can do this until they release a patch to fix the battery indicator.

Don't email them....just call them. They will remove them generally without question.

Quick response and they said they forwarded my complaint. I'm liking CS :D;

That is funny.. considering there is no promotional anything for the moment...

The promotional media could be the 'web ads'...
Web ads?!? Still missing something LOL... Sprint hasent spent a dime on advertisments for the moment.. even their "holiday" special had the moment on the 3rd set of phones.. not on the first like the HTC HERO

http://holiday.sprint.com/
Notice the 3 "featured" phones.. HTC Hero, Palm Pre, and Blackberry Tour

Hell even the 8330 curve and reclaim are before the moment (if you read left to right as most important which i would).. Click the phone finder thing and notice the first 3 again... Pre, Hero and Tour.. Notice which one is the last on that list.. kinda like "oh isn't there something else we can put here then our most powerful phone currently?"

Look at the descriptions lol...
Hero: Hello, future
Moment: The smartphones thats all work and play...

How is the hero the future when the moment is newer and more powerful?

Well, I admit I didn't read the link provided, but how do updates/upgrades generally occur? I assume it's going to be free? Is it something we download from a link from the browser?
Updates/upgrades are free (android is an opensource platform so no one could charge you even if they wanted to)... The problem is if samsung doesn't recode the OS (each rom of android has to be specifically tailored to the hardware of the device to miminize size) then they wont be released to us.. But if samsung/sprint fails, there is always a group of coders who will more then likely (they are already working on one) make a hybrid rom (or just recode the rom themselves)... So don't worry, we will get the new OS one way or another ;)

I do not work for Sprint or Samsung

To answer the general question of "Why was the moment released with 1.5 instead of 1.6 or 2.0?" I created this little post on a different forum.. Figured it would be helpful to share my OPINIONS (yes these have really no factual information behind them but it is my best observation and assesment of the situation)

Samsung had been working on the moment for months (well probably closer to a year or so but the way it seems to be patchwork i can't believe this)... Along with the Behold II (be thankful we don't have touchwiz)... At the time they started development, only Android 1.5 was avalible so that is what they started to code on. When 1.6 was released (back in september of this year) they were already planning on a november launch date. If they had to go back to stock Android 1.6 SDK, they would have had to recode everything (from the drivers to all of sprints applications that they had just ported to Android 1.5).. You are talking about a couple of months of dev and testing so they made the decision to continue foward with Android 1.5.. Create a small team (atleast from what i have heard) to attempt to get the jump start on an android 1.6 recode that can be undertaken after the device was released by the general group... But then Android 2.0 came out, and they had to make the decision if they would continue to put resources into android 1.6, or devert them to finally get the Moment out to sprint and then worry about a recode to 2.0 (1.5 to 1.6 was a major work, but nothing compared to the changes in 1.6 to 2.0)... Meanwhile the DROID was touted as the "flagship" android phone (and only phone running 2.0).. This makes us believe motorola was given the Android 2.0 SDK way ahead of its official release (and thus motorola had an unfair advantage on the competition).. Just look at how google advertised the droid on its own search engine main page.. http://searchengineland.com/figz/wp-content/seloads/2009/11/google-droid-ad.gif
No other android phone has been given an official google advertisement on their homepage. Leading us to believe Google and Motorola were working together to attempt to get the Droid out ASAP with 2.0 (imagine if google assisted Samsung to recode android for the moment how much faster it would be.. the people who made the damn OS helping adapt it to a new device)...

The hidden gain is Google gets to enjoy the press and advertisements that Verizon has been pouring in the droid.. Probably raised their stock a pretty penny also (havent actually looked into this but one must believe it to be true)... Meanwhile samsung is still multiplatform coding (WinMO, Android and now their own BADA OS) so they have to split resources among the 3 different development groups, each group only being specific to the operating system... Motorola on the other hand has how many smartphones on how many OSes?!? I think DROID is their only official smartphone on a smartphone OS (please correct me if i am wrong)...The only good thing samsung has going for them is that HTC also has a vested interest on getting 1.6 and/or 2.0 out for their own device.. Thus they have a common goal to get the sprint applications upgraded...

HTC has the same problem (and probably why they are slow to the gun on an OS upgrade)... But HTC has one up on Samsung.. They have a huge underground DEV group that is currently working on patching and fixing stuff... They would be idiots not to "borrow" some things from the XDA dev group and save on having to do it themselves... Why pay for work when you can get someone else to do it for free (and probably more efficent)...

think I mentioned (as others might have as well) the basics of that in the whole 2.0 thread about already in development with 1.5 when 1.6 was released and with 2.0 out it makes no sense to do a 1.6 stopgap since that would take time away from getting 2.0 up and running. did this need it's own thread or could it just have been mentioned in the 2.0 thread where everyone has been looking? not trying to be mean, just seems like the place for it since that discussion has been ongoing and no more than a few days old with the last post.

I think it would be nothing less than silly to think that HTC aren't miles ahead of the XDA devs. You have to consider the fact that XDA devs take a build, and slap it together as fast as possible without regards (initially) to debugging. I guarantee you HTC's made a lot more progress than them and have their own in-house 2.0 builds.

Numus, I think you've provided a pretty accurate assessment into what negotiations were going on behind the scenes. Knowing how much Motorola had at stake (it already had one leg in the grave), I wouldn't be surprised if they had forked over A LOT of money in order to get the exclusive to 2.0 - or at least, negotiated to have Verizon leverage that relationship for them with Google, knowing that both the big V and Motorola needed some extra "umph" to take on Apple and AT&T.

I only hope that 2.0 will fix the stuttering that I get in the Sprint Radio or in Pandora. That's my greatest gripe. The battery life isn't aweful for me. I can plug-in to my USB port at work and get a charge. (Mostly needed if I'm listening to music!) If I just use the Moment as a phone and the occasional text/email I'm getting 12+ hours with 60% charge left over.

My 2nd, and last complaint is that my 'V' key doesn't work as good as the rest of my keys! :)

Had sprint but their lack of english speaking intelligent csa's not to mention dropped calls, no service. WAIT sprint leave the droid market alone you will just bring the name down. Being last in everything, you should learn to crawl before you decide to run in life with the rest.

I speak english better than most people I know, and I know much more than I'm required to.
There is only 1 call center that I am aware of outside of the US.

Also, I live in a 2 story brick apartment, and I can get my location everytime. Turn the damn wireless networks off.

Yes it is the Wireless Network Location that is broken (have written a lengthy reasoning to try to stop people from claiming their phone is broken)... But that is just luck getting a GPS signal within a brick building.. You on the 2nd story or 1st story? (not that i doubt you.. i have gotten similiar results with my garmin venture HC and other recievers)...
will this update let you delete apps like bejeweled demo and amazon mp3
No.. the only way to remove these is by rooting the phone and deleting the apk files from /system/apps .. I once believed that root is what bricked my phone (boot loop) but i fixed it with the odin firmware reflash and did it again (i never learn).. i now believe it was Startup Auditor that bricked the phone since the root is only temporary...
