So what's Verizon's policy if I want to upgrade my Droid for this early?

I renewed my contract when I bought my droid when it first came out. So if I wanna buy a Droid 2 what is Verizon's policy on buying a new phone under contract?

so even if you signed a 2 year contract in say January 2010 in january 2011 you could upgrade with 1 year of contract left, and forfeiting the NE2 would be the only consequence?

Nothing in the policy states any limitations, so I don't see why you couldn't do that. Honestly, NE2 was the only reason I used to wait, but that ended when they cut it from $100 to $50. Not only that, but devices in general have dropped in price substantially in the last 2 years.

This was my same reasoning. Although when I upgraded to the Incredible, I had my NE2 grandfathered from the $100 days, so I used that. Not sure if they will continue to do so, and if they do, I am more than willing to wait. However, if they drop me down to $50, I will be upgrading next April.

Until my TP2, smartphones were historically $250-$300 with a 2-year (after rebate), and now they're $200 almost every time. It all works out in the end, so I won't be waiting for my NE2 anymore.

This time around though, I'm going to hold out and see if any new rumors are on the horizon by late September. If not, I'll probably go with the Droid 2. Now if Moto wants to release the Droid 2 in time for my trip (beginning of August), I'll probably jump on it for something to play with while I'm gone.

Here's a question though. If you use the annual upgrade, don't like the phone, and return it, can you use your annual upgrade again, or does it get forfeited?

I'm not 100% sure but I would assume if you were to return it, then you get back that upgrade. Similar to if you were to use your NE2 to upgrade, and didn't like the phone, when you return that phone, you get back your NE2.

You still get to take advantage of the 30 day warranty. If you return the device you have the restocking fee to deal with but you still get your annual upgrade again once.

True if purchased at a Verizon Wireless Corporate Store, but not true if purchased at a Best Buy location (they also give you the rebate up front as well)...

Purely just hear say but when I was at a local verizon store I was told buy a tech there, don't be surprised by end of year to see some kind of 2ghz smart phone with a 4.3 or 4.6 screen. He told me he heard motorola or htc would like to produce one. He said they would call it a "mini computer on your hip".

If you're on a price plan of $79.99 or higher your get a $50 credit.

You have 30 days to return your device,
yes you get your annual upgrade back, no forfeiture.

If there is a hardware defect, you do not pay the restocking fee.
I called customer care and mentioned every issue going on with my X, and even mentioned that I performed a factory data reset, with no prevail w/ issues/bugs.
Customer Care noted my account to waive the restock fee, should I return my defective X within 30 days.
If a VZ store tries to STILL charge you, politely and professionally have them call customer care for you, before the return goes any further.
Or when your name is called in store, you could be up front, and make the call to customer care the first thing you do.
Customer Care WILL waive the restock fee on the spot, should you purchase a new phone that's defective.
Im astonished how many In Store Reps don't know this, won't admit or tell you.

This is incorrect.
Annual upgrade is every year, which does not include the NE2 price discount of $100, hence "New Every Two"
There ARE ways to get the NE2 early, but you have to pretty close to your original NE2 date.
Some people's ne2 discount is $100, while others are now only $50
