Help Missing Vibration ? ... give it a tap!

Ok my desire is now losing vibration pretty much every single day. Tried lots of different ways to get it back, and to it's credit lol it usually turns up one way or another.

Well I think I've isolated the problem to a manufacturing fault, at least on my phone - no idea if it's across the board or I'm just lucky

When the vibration disappears try giving the back of the phone a slight tap (no I don't mean against the side of a desk/table), just with a couple of fingers.

I've done this as soon as I've realised the vibration has gone and it's immediately come back every time (3 times over 3/4 days).

It would seem in my case this is a handset fault so as soon as I can live without it for a fortnight I'll get it sent back.

Oh and it's worth noting I'm very careful with my phone and treat it with the respect it deserves, apart from the occasional clout now I know that's what it needs lol.

I had a similar issue. My phone would not vibrate for messages whatever I tried to do. It worked fine for everything else just texts.

It turned out to be an app that was stopping it so after a reset I slowly installed my apps from backup until I figured out which one was causing the issue.

All good now and my phone is happilly buzzing away

I had this same problem. All vibration feedback would vanish and return... well, whenever it felt like it. Rebooting often did not bring it back, but it would usually return after an hour or so.

I tried factory resetting the phone but I still had the problem. In the end I took the phone back to the shop and got a refund as it was my 4th handset and all of them had had problems.

I hope you do find a way to fix it, but if factory resetting did not solve it for me, I'm not sure if it will help you.

I think it is most likely a low level driver error, which is not fixable.

I had similar issues with Vibrate...though not exactly like yours, mine would only vibrate intermittently.

Found the answer on another forum. I got an app called 'Sound Manager' and when you start it up go Menu>Vibrate Settings> and check that there's a tick in 'Vibrate Whenever Possible'. Mine was not ticked...even though I'd enabled it to do so in every setting I could think of.

Ticked it and everything's been tickety-boo since!

Apparently, you can uninstall it once it gets it sorted out for you, but I've just left it on my Desire.

Worth a try.....

I'm guessing it's more of a physical fault on my unit. The fact a light tap on the case brings it back has me thinking that maybe when something else that uses vibration (such as haptic feedback, a call etc) kicks in then it's introducing the failed vibration, the tap is then re-connecting something or resetting some sensor to allow the vibrate to return.

EDIT: Yeh I've tried the sound manager route, and sometimes that worked after a reboot etc, also removing the battery worked sometimes too - but this tap on the back of the unit is working EVERY time.

So essentially I have the fix lol, just not one I'll stick to long term - will be returning the handset for repair at some point.

Well I decided to book my phone in for collection on Friday (tomorrow) to try and get the vibration failure sorted.

Just hope it doesn't come back worse than it went, it's pretty much perfect cosmetically.

Does anyone have any experiences (good or bad, hopefully good tho lol) of HTC service repairs ?

It was only picked up on Friday so it's still in the UPS system. Due to the intermittent nature of the problem I'm prepared for the likely event of it coming back exactly the same if I'm honest.

I did actually notice the last time the vibration disappeared (after I purposely left it untouched) it actually came back again by itself so I can live with it if I have to I suppose.

I know quite a few people have similar issues so as soon as I get any more info I'll post it on here Truespin ;-)

Just got the email to say it's ready to come back. Phoned them up and apparently they have changed the 'Vibration module' and a soft-key ... maybe they mean the hardware keys :-s

It's supposed to be back with me on Friday so I guess I'll find out then ... I have missed it

I've found HTC service repairs to be very good and very thorough. You will get a printout when they deliver your phone which will detail what the problem was and what they have done to fix it.

Cosmetically you won't have a problem, mine came back in exactly the same state as I sent it.

My Desire has been losing vibration lately also. I just thought it was because of the HTC FOTA update, since it began shortly after installing it.

Hmmm not great - just rung them to be told it hasn't even been sent (was supposed to arrive back today) ... oh well, hopefully it'll turn up on Monday.

@ bdndk - Also the rattle when you tap the back of the phone seemed to get progressively worse as the missing vibration function seemed to become more frequent.

What a nightmare!!! They clearly haven't fixed anything. Given that this is not a common problem, I'd phone them back up and ask them what they intend to do. You are entitled to a working phone and If they cannot repair it you are entitled to a replacement or refund.

I've asked for the matter to be passed to someone with authority to look further into the issue and I've been promised a reply within 48hrs as it's been escalated.

We'll see what happens ;-)

I can update a little further on this with another possible solution. I was suffering a similar intermittant vibration issue however noticing someone mention the AudioManager app I checked it on my Desire.

I am using Audio Manager from Smart Android Apps the audio manager that allows you to custom skin the widget. Now usually I just allow my apps to update and not bother clicking into them afterwards, however after reading the above I opened up the main AM screen to see the usual list of fixes supplied with the last update with a request to unlink connected audio streams. I unlinked the streams and then at the bottom left turned on Vibrate and then turn Normal on again. This seems to have fixed the intermittant issue with vibrate and haptic feedback. As it would appear the vibrations were linked to my media and ringer volume streams so if either was turned down it would be intermittant or both turned down vibration wouldn't occur at all.

For your consideration of course.

I have exactly the same problem as the OP, the vibration intermittently stops but tapping the back of the phone always returns it. I'm glad it's not just mine!

Will keep an eye on this thread in case someone finds a fix. Seemingly sending it back to HTC wouldn't be worthwhile...

edit > Audio Manager didn't fix it for me, so for now I'm stuck with patchy vibration.

The vibration stopped working completely but the rest was OK so I thought 'Oh well, could be worse'.
About a year later it slipped again, onto concrete. I thought it had had it, but all that happened was the vibration came back!

Not that I'm proposing this as a solution...

and I thought it was just my phone that did that! I also don't think that vibrate is as strong as it used to be. Was going to get it sent back but looks as though they won't solve the problem

Further to this, a short sharp shake will have the same effect. Great discovery by the original poster! Frustrating that such a good phone has a few little bugs like this.

Well I decided that I'd had enough. It went back to Vodafone on Monday. I'll let you know if I get anywhere. tef89 did you manage to get it sorted in the end?

The final replacement I got back from HTC is a lot better. It loses vibration maybe once every few months and when it does it comes straight back after a light shake as I mentioned.

I just live with it now.
