Isn't there a #????# to find an update that is being sent out?

I have searched and looked and found nothing. I seem to remember a #????# that you could put in the phone when there is an update going out? Or maybe I am losing it?

There is the "check in" service: *#*#checkin#*#* (do not click "send," just wait) .. it will query the airwaves for anything for your device.

Nothing now, if you have an Eris. ;)

My sister put off the update, thinking she could always get it later. The "about phone" section of the menu says that her system is up to date. Dialing the checkin code didn't give us the update notification either. Should she take it to a Verizon store to get 2.1? I'm not sure we are brave enough to try installing leaked versions. Any advice? Thanks!

In the about section, which version does your phone say that you have? I'm willing to bet that she upgraded from 1.5 to 2.1 and either didn't realize it or just forgot.

Are you confusing this current update with the 2.1 update that came out in May?

System updates are sent out and controlled by Verizon. They do it in phases, to a certain number of phones. To do this, they have to use some identifier tied to phones. If this number isn't on their list of targeted phones, you WILL NOT GET THE UPDATE. You can do the update-check key-sequences until your phone buttons wear off.

It can happen to more than one person... Doesn't change that it's a coincidence. If people think it works, let's ALL do it today and see how many get the update. In this scenario, it appears the update roll-out has been stopped, so it's not a fair test. Fact is, plenty of people tried it earlier in the week when VZW was pushing it. Who got it ? Everyone who tried ? No... Only those on "the list". Did some get it by doing the number sequence ? Sure, because they were on this list.

I think that it's important to highlight the part about people getting it because they were on "the list". All that you say is very true. IF you are on the list and your phone has not checked in to the server for an update, then the checkin command would work. So maybe you get your update a few hours earlier because you entered checkin every five minutes. The fact does remain though, that no person will get the update, no matter how many times you checkin, unless it has been pushed out to your number.

I'm beginning to think they (VZW) just "extend the truth" and tell us there are OTA updates just around the bend...then they sit back and watch us all go into a frenzy. ;)

My Eris does not have phone buttons....that would be used to dial "checkin":
