i just got the regular moto droid from best buy on the 2nd of this month and im still under the 30 days to try out new phones just have to pay the difference thats all but the droid x is out should i get it the rooting no happining for a while is fine for me...... is it worth me giving back my droid and putting up a extra 100 dollars for it then be stuck with it ....

It really depends on what you plan on using the phone for. The Moto Droid is an awesome phone with a ton of potential. You can root it, rom it, and overclock it to your hearts desire. If you are into techy stuff and like tinkering with your gadgets then you should probably stick with the Droid. Keep in mind however, that the Droid is now 9 months old and is reaching it's "End of Life" with Verizon. That doesn't mean it's no longer a good phone, it just means that most likely one more official update or so and that'll be it for a while (I'm guessing at this here). This again goes with if you are a techy person. No official updates doesn't mean much if you're comfortable flashing new roms to it yourself.

Now, on the other side of things. If you are more of a, shall I say, general consumer and just want a phone to work fine and fast out of the box, not have to think about rooting or roms, then you should go with the Droid X because it's the new flagship phone, and support on it will be heavy for a while. I'm sure root will come to the X at some point, but it's very doubtful you'll be able to flash roms to it for a long while, if ever. Both are very good phones and I'm sure will suit you well, you just need to think about what you want overall with your phone.

I am in the same boat. I got the droid dirt cheap while I was waiting for the Dinc to arrive. Got tired of the wait list. My wife has the incredible so I have had a chance to diddle around with both the droid and the dinc. The dinc is snappier. It moves and flows faster but the internet use was basically a wash. The dinc was a bit faster but you really had to pay attention to notice any difference. I am assuming the x is in the same league with the dinc althogh I have only played around with it a bit in the store. My dinc finally arrived and I sent it back. To tell you the truth there just was not that much difference. The killer for me with the x is the size but that is a personal preference. Anyway, since I had 2 lines I could use to upgrade I am sticking with the droid until something comes out much better.
I may even get around to rooting it and then I would be leaps and bounds ahead of the game but for now the droid is fine with me.

I just got done looking at the Droid X at the Verizon store 10 minutes ago. There is absolutely no reason for ME to get this phone. Compared to my Droid running the latest Kangerade ROM at 1.1 ghz the X felt slow and laggy. I'll stick with my trusty Droid until an LTE phone comes out. Just my opinion.

There's more to it than just feeling slow.

Our original DROIDs came with no bells and whistles, just good old Android OS. Even without OCing, as soon as you put a 2.2 ROM on there, it flies, even at stock speeds. The (finally!) working JIT makes a *huge* difference.

I did a side by side comparison - it really depends upon what you want and what you need, but if you *ever* want to use a customized ROM, then the DROID X is out, until someone hacks eFuse and / or the bootloader.

I'm in the same boat as the OP and I am keeping my Droid.

I think as odd as it sounds.....the deciding factor for me was the keyboard, not really because I use it to type a ton but the gamegripper is amazing! I play snes all the time. There's also the restocking fee and the extra money but mostly I just really like the Droid and have decided to keep it. It's really just a matter of preference though, you should test one out at Best Buy and decide for yourself.

The choice is really over what form factor you like and only you can make that decision. The X will not be able to have custom Roms but it can be rooted for wifi tether.
