Root Aaaalmost bricked my incredible

Unrevoked made it waaay to easy to root. Now people with no business rooting, like myself, can do it in the time it takes me to go downstairs and feed the dog :p. Seeing how easy getting root was, I tried my hand at installing a custom kernel. Big mistake seeing as I don't even know what that means. I tried installing hydra and the next thing I know, my phone is stuck on the boot animation and refuses to load any further. I almost cried :p. I rebooted about a hundred times and got the same result. By that point I was pretty sure my phone was now a shiny black brick.

I went in to the Verizon store to see what I could do about replacing it. To be honest, I had every intention of going in there and just getting a Droid X instead. Didn't realize just how huge that thing was until I saw it. The camera was pretty disappointing too. Moto/ninjablur was just the nail in the coffin. Of course, none of that really mattered because they had neither the Incredible nor the X in stock (silly me). They told me to come in on monday since their system was down and they would send me a replacement Incredible. (The manager there confirmed the OTA coming soon btw)

I got home and looked up how to do a hard reset, hoping it would wipe out whatever mess I put on there but that didn't work. Right when I was ready to give up, I remembered seeing a recovery option during the reset. Nandroid to the rescue! Needless to say, I'm pretty much done tinkering for now. I'll leave the overclocking to the experts. Word of advice: Make sure you know what you're doing before you start messing around with the programming. Its really not worth it.

Definitely do some research and read the instructions before you do anything.

I was in your shoes a few weeks ago and have been reading everything I can get my hands on. It doesn't take long to get a good handle on this stuff. Just make sure you learn what everything in ClockworkMod Recovery does before you do anything else. That's the best way to go about things.

Next time (if you decide there is a next time), just download all of the kernels for either wireless N or no wireless N, and slowly downgrade them until you find one that works. The order is outlined on the hydra kernels website. I ended up having to use the third one as the first two both put me in a boot loop. The stock kernel is also up there in case none of them are stable for your phone.

Also, if you have any questions about anything or need help you can shoot me a PM if you like. I'm by no means an expert, but I'm starting to get the hang of this stuff. I'm even working on my own theme now! (Not particularly exciting to everyone else, but I'm stoked).

Tinker all you want. As long as you have a Nandroid backup you've pretty safe. Though you should get the Asurion insurance for a while so you can "lose" your phone if you need to.

Agreed. If you don't know what root is, don't root. If you can't find a directory called "root" on your SD card, don't root. There should be a 10 question quiz before Unrevoked does it's thing.

People bitch and moan that HTC, Moto, etc are breaking the cardinal rule of "Open Source" by locking down root on these phones, when the plain and simple fact is, that if they just gave it to the masses they would have to deal with a lot of bullshit service claims.
