The fact that Epic pre orders are over doesn't really mean much. MAYBE the phone will sell out at first because they said themselves their first batch will only be a couple hundred thousand, but after the initial batch this phone won't sell out. Partly because Samsung makes their own screens (only reason the Evo is sold out due to screen shortages) and partly because the price tag. Existing Sprint customers who are sick of waiting for an Evo might jump at this phone, but the price tag is gonna be a turn off to people considering the switch to sprint when they see Droids or other Galaxy S phones selling for $200 or less.

Official Update from Samsung: There is NO GPS bug in the Epic! End of discussion!

"We have tested and validated both Network Assisted (indoor) and Autonomous (outdoor) GPS on the Epic 4G. With regards to Vibrant and Captivate, we are currently testing software updates which will optimize GPS performance. We expect to be able to make the updates available in September and will communicate more information and download instructions in the next few weeks."

In other words, the Captivate and the Vibrant have the bug and will be fixed next month; the Epic, meanwhile, should be good to go when it launches on the 31st. Cheers to that, we say.

wait the op said sprint said keep the evo, why wouldnt you keep the evo as well you already paid for it, you dont turn your previous phone in when you upgrade

all i remember was sprint all syked and hyped about this new samsung coming out few years back, suppose to be the shiz...(touted as iphone smasher) anybody remember that old samsung phone, came with 2 batteries, touchscreen.....and a stylus that got lost as soon as u put it down....

I hear that Instinct story a million times. I had the Sprint Touch before the Instinct came out. I still have my Sprint Touch, I just don't cut it on anymore. But I still have service to the phone. I can't even touch the screen on the phone without trying to press my finger through the damn screen...LOL

OOOOOOOOOhhh the pain of remembering the instinct I thought i was past that and you had to bring back the hurt and anguish.... back to therapy.. :)

The EVO is non existent right now. Samsung is the manufacturer of the screens and blocked production of the EVO screen to put out the Epic. Now HTC is cutting a deal with Sony to bring them in. I played with an Epic today, one thing I will admit is that the screen and movie quality is top notch. Avatar looked awesome on that phone. BUT! EVO is still the standard. That Epic's processor can't hold the EVO's jock!

I don't know why so many people dislike or have issues with the EVO. Don't give me the battery life issue because I can easily get 24hrs out of it, usually more. Don't give me the Sense issue, as any launcher will fix that (and after using LauncherPro, you realize just how good sense is.) Does the EPIC have a kickstand, 8 megapixel camera, and most important IMO: Froyo? Didn't think so, so please let the people who want to keep their EVO (like me) and have not had issues alone.

Have you been living under a rock or are you bloody oblivious?

Screen separation, light leakage, recessed/crack power buttons, dust underneath the screen. Yeah, these are just a few of the quality control issues that have plagued this device. I'll probably get flamed for this post but I don't care because if you went through 3-4 phones in 3 months you'd be disgruntled, too.

Who wants to carry around a phone with a huge keyboard attached? Not this guy. Besides, the keyboard looks cheap. And doesn't the phone cost $249 anyway. You aren't getting a deal.

I agree. It's kind of funny if you think about it. A guy pays more for an Android phone than anyone else charges on the market and is happy about it.

They've done this for me twice before, only difference was that it was a blackberry instead of an EVO. I don't know why so many people dislike or have issues with the EVO. People pay a premium for the Epic for the 1 gig internal memory... wait... that's a fraction of all the other Galaxy S models.

The monthly bills are where its at though. Even if you pay an extra 50 bucks for the Epic up front, You will make that up in about two months with Sprint. When compared to most other carriers, Sprints plans are the better bargain. It helps to look at the big picture.

All smartphones get dust under the screen, to include the Iphone 4..ugg

Screen separation, light leakage, and cracked power buttons is not wide spread. Out of 300,000 phones you will have defects. To be honest most people getting the EVO are newbies and I can tell you they don't understand the EVO let alone how to run Android.

However, the Samsung EPIC isn't even out yet and the GPS doesn't work. Thats an IFAIL flaw...LOL And the problem is with ALL THE SAMSUNG PHONES>>>LOL

I can't really trust anything from Samsung or Engadget after making statements, getting called out by users, restating things, making promises, excuses, pointing blame.

@Osnaz Actually engadget first said the GPS was fine, then people with Galaxy phone asked them to check it and they found it doesn't work properly, but got a samsung spin that it had to do with an Android requirement. Then a bunch more people said, that isn't the real issue, and Engadget finally got the correct answer from Samsun, which is: they have a long standing duplicatable problem with Galaxy GPS, that is not from Android since comparative tests shoe other android phones dont have the problem (example EVO and Driod) . The fix by the way is not a GPS fix, it is a triangulation fix. The GPS problem, confirmed on PPCGEEKS and XDA developers cnanot be currently fixed by the users.,

Until someone with an Epic downloads GPS Test in the Android Market and reports or better yet shows video of how many satellites in view, in use, and accuracy...then talk by Samsung carries zero credibility at this point.

"Tested and validated" GPS is working exclaims Engadget. But their test as they state clearly is:
Our testing suggests that it's functional -- Google Maps was able to give us extremely precise positions very quickly
Wow, what scientific testing that sounds like! And they ran multiple tests, I wonder what secret GPS Tests they used? Do they even realize there is an app out there called "GPS Test"?!

Samsung and Engadget seem a little too arm in arm and friendly about all this, you'd think Engadget was just the Marketing and Public Relations division of Samsung.

Defect my ass. It's a widespread issue. There have been numerous reports on these issues. And HTC are renown for shitty craftsmanship and cheap parts. I've had 3 EVOs that were lemons. That's no coincidence.

agreed!!! :D

I guess you didn't read the post by the Sprint Rep who said 1 out of every 10 customers call for the EPIC. The other 9 are looking for an EVO and DO NOT WANT A CRAPPY EPIC FAILURE 4G....LOL

10% of people are calling for a phone that won't be released for 2 weeks. That's pretty amazing. Your comment kind of backfired on you...
