Froyo RUU update available

Please can you help,

I originally used the first RUU on page 1 a couple of weeks ago, it went fine, same PC, same cable.

Today I tried to use the new, unbranded RUU (RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.10.405.2_R_Radio_32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed)

I still have my goldcard in as it is also my SD card.

When the RUU gets to the point in the installer where it looks to verify the info on your phone prior to installing, It fails with the error:

"ERROR [170]: USB CONNECTION ERROR
The rom update utility cannot connect to your android phone...bla bla"

I have tried doing it with both USB debugging enabled and without, I have rebooted my PC, I still have HTC sync installed from last time, and the phone shows up as a usb drive ok in windows when not doing the RUU. I am running Windows 7 64bit.

I have ok'd all promts from my firewall, so I dont think that is the problem.

Any Ideas?
cheers.

Yes your Desire will remain unlocked.
Yes this RUU comes with sense.
Screen type does not matter.
The RUU on this page has the latest radio available, and so far has worked for everyone (including myself).

Before you update with either of the RUU files. Be sure to copy down your APN settings as you may have to enter them manually to get your data connection working after the update.
When I check the APN section in the settings app, it gives me a blank screen. What does this mean? I can still use the ruu, correct?

If you haven't already installed the RUU:

You need to go to settings -> wireless & networks -> mobile networks -> Access Point Names -> then click on whatever APN is there (mine is Telus SP as that in my provider. Write down all of the information you find on that screen.

If you have already installed the RUU:

You will need to do a Google search for your providers APN settings.

HTH!

Have you installed Android SDK? if you have your HTC Sync drivers may be messed. Try going to the HTC website and reinstall the latest version of Sync.

When you plug in your phone, make usb is set to HTC Sync and that USB debugging is enabled.

Means you have to add it. You'll need to find the settings from your network, then add by pressing menu>add or something like that.
im in the us and on tmobile. i still haven't gotten the data service. Does that affect things at all? its probably the reason why i have a blank apn screen. if i use the ruu first and then get the data service, do i have to mess with the apn stuff?

That IS weird because I did the update from the first page and mine also went from Telus A8182 to A8181.

EDIT - just realized you said you hadn't updated yet which means the phone is running a branded version, so the model number can say just about anything. Once you do the update, it should show the generic version which is A8181.

The language pack is slightly different as there is no Canadian (English) or (French) options, and no United States (English) option either.

I'm not too concerned about the language pack anyway as long as the phone works properly here (which it definitely does). I'm guessing the model number simply changed to the standard A8181 as that is the model used in Europe. The radio freqs won't change for us CDN/US users as I believe it's a hardware configuration for the North American market and software can't change the actual radio hardware.
;)
As for locked status, you can do the update whether it's locked or not and the status doesn't change when you do an update as the lock codes are separate from the ROM firmware and specific to the IMEI number. Mine is unlocked and stayed that way when I did the update.

Now that this newer RUU is available though, I'm going to give it a try and see how it works later today and will report back.
:D

Please let me know how it goes and if the phone still reads 8181, as for the rest I agree it changed a few things but my radio bands are working just fine infact with the telus 2.1 I could not get my 850 edge to work because some say that since telus does not use the 850 band they blocked it but after installing the Froyo my 850 edge works just fine!!!

thanks, Dont think I have ever installed the SDK,
I installed the latest version of HTC sync when I used the 1st RUU,
but I will check again.

I will try again at some point with the phone set to HTC Sync and debugging enabled, cheers.

how do I set the phone to 'usb' as HTC Sync mode when its going to be in fast boot/boot-loader mode when I connect it?

Good point...I forgot about being in fastboot. ignore the comment about being in HTC sync mode or having debugging mode enabled. My bad.

:D

I flashed my Canadian Telus Desire with the original RUU in this thread and as mentioned the language pack is a little different with no US english, just UK. Another consequence of this I've found is that search results give a lot of UK info and same with the built in news widget, most of the source options are UK based. Kind of a pain but oh well, what can you do.

where can i turn off the haptic vibration option... it is OFF on my settings, but my phone is still vibrating.
I just checked the Haptic option in Settings, Sound and turning it off still uses haptic feedback...bug? I like haptic feedback, so I don't mind, but it seems like a bug if it can't be disabled.
and, i also want to turn the sound on when pressing the qwerty keyboard. any ideas?
It's found in the same settings screen, enable Audible selection and it will tick upon presses.

I have worked on my phone attempting to get the Ruu to see the phone for the last three hours and nothing has worked??? I give up and hope that it comes out from HTC in a over the air update!!!!! VERY FRUSTRATING AT BEST!!!!

Sorry for the all caps I am just worked out and tired of this!!!!

Hope it goes better for the rest of you.:)
I got it working

Makesure you have latest HTC sync installed
connect device while booted into bootloader
right click my computer and go to manage
go to device manager
click on Android device and click on HTC bootloader (or Android bootloader)
right click and update
choose "let me pick"
click browse
click have disk
browse to C:\Program Files\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Win7_x86
click ok
select My HTC
reconnect the device and it should work

If you get a cid error use a different sdcard for the goldcard (thats what i had to do)
im now on the latest RUU using windows 7 professional.

if it fails the first time, you will need to disconnect and reconnect

thanks for the reply... It could be a bug... again on the setting menu my haptic Vibe box is un-ticked - but it still vibrate... how does this Haptic affect the battery life?

and as for the sound on the keys (qwerty) - i can't find the option to turn the sound on, only the sound for Dial Pad, no qwerty option..

I managed to update to the newer RUU file and the same bug is there too. As for battery life I would say it's negligible and you will never notice the difference. Same goes for vibrate and ring...turning on vibrate along with the ringer doesn't hurt battery life very much, although it will affect it more than just the mild haptic feedback.
and as for the sound on the keys (qwerty) - i can't find the option to turn the sound on, only the sound for Dial Pad, no qwerty option..
Follow the directions, open Settings, Sound, Audible Selection. Enable that setting and there will be a mild "tick" sound whenever you tap any key, menu item, or app icon on the screen. There is also an option to enable screen lock/unlock sound effect.

That was it for me...I uninstalled the old version first and installed the newest version 3.0.5422 last night and it recognized the phone immediately. I didn't need to do anything else related to updating the drivers. I'm running Windows 7 x64, so that might make a difference.

Note it specifically states it's not for NA customers, but neither is the RUU update file, technically, but they both work fine. Here's the link to the file at HTC:

HTC Desire - Application - HTC Sync for Android 2.1 & 2.2

There is short webform to fill out with your serial number at the bottom before you can download the file, then select the program, and the download site closest to you.

The differences between the two seem negligible...I can't find any obvious differences except for the software versions. Performance and battery life appear the same so far.

It didn't go at all...I've tried a few times but the update refused to find my phone, so I'm still using the first RUU update on the first page. That's fine with me as I've found it works great. If a solution comes up, I'll update, but for now I'm content with my current 2.2 version.

Well I have tried everything I even went so far as reinstalling the RUU from the first page which went on without a problem and then tried the new Ruu and it still would not see the phone, now if anyone could explain that one I would be happy to listen!!!!

My current firmware is working fine so I do not see why I am in such a hurry to put something new on the phone, I guess I should look at it this way " If it is working fine then WHY MESS with it"!!!!

Thank You all for the posts and help!!:)

I found out that unrevoked will be releasing a root for froyo, guess if I cannot upgrade this way I will root as soon as they release it..

So, I was playing with the phone during my meeting earlier today and I found out where to disable the Haptic and to enable the sounds for qwerty keys.
So on the setting menu
