Anyone jumping ship to Fascinate?

I don't know if camera phones are any different, but with DSLR's it's more about the lens than anything. It's better to invent in a $500-$1000 dollar lens than a $1000-$1500 camera.

Well, sort of. Part of that doesn't really have to do with the quality of the lens glass, it's often more to do with gaining something out of the lens that you wouldn't otherwise get, like a specialized focal length or a wide aperture or faster focusing mechanism.

Lots of the cheapo consumer lenses actually have sharpness in spades.

The lens is important for a lot of reasons, but you can see the impact that bad sensors and bad processing have on these images for the camera phones. Blotchy details due to heavy image processing to remove noise - noise which is generated by having too many pixels packed into too small an area.

What I don't understand is how so many people have no problem with bing being tired to the search button. Does every android owner only use 3/4 of the buttons? I know I use my search key ALL the time and it would absolutely be a deal breaker if that key wasn't tied to google. It seems so minimal to most people but I think having google search right there is incredibly valuable.

I dont have a problem with it because Bing isnt that bad of a search engine. Im very pro-google but as for it being a deal breaker because its bing, I cant say it is.

Nah, after I noticed that the Dinc was in trouble because they demanded Samsung screens I thought, well Samsung does make one hell of a TV and these new tablet phones are mostly screen, why not? But no, I also took a step back and looked at what Moto has achieved, the X won by a land slide ( and I'm saying that from a buggy froyo user too, can't wait until the package is complete )

Verizon locking out all search except Bing makes me LOL. I wonder if Samsung knows that Verizon is trying to sabotage their phone.

I'll repeat again since it was obviously missed by some people...

To clear up any misinformation... the only thing that Microsoft really takes over is the search WIDGET and the little search button on the bottom. That's it. Google maps, google voice search, google navigation beta, google talk, google voice, gmail integration, and so forth are all fine.

If you have Google.com as your search engine in the browser... anything you search through it will go through Google.

Just got a Fascinate to test it and see what all they hype is about, would i switch? read on and see..

at first glance sitting it next to my X its smaller, thinner and just feels frail.

the volume button feels super cheap and is loose and moveswhen you move the phone.. cheap again, one in a million bad phone you say? nah i got the buy one get one free, same on the other one...

pop the case and a quick look at the back and at least you dont have to remove the battery to remove your sdcard,, a plus
same 1500mah battery of the DX but if your one of those people that panics when your phone gets hotter than normal, since the rear case is thinner you will feel the heat alot more.

pretty nice speaker phone....until you put the back door back on and the opening for the speaker is cut in half...

ughhh damn that volume button rattle as i pick up phone to check the camera...oh looky there, no spec on the camera? 1 flash, ok theres a camera on it of unknown megapixels with one flash, rtfm i guess...

USB port has a cute little slider door, awww.. enough.. we move on to the OS.

powering it on is pretty spectacular but of course it has the samung AMOLED screen so pretty much black and white text messages are stunning..

All i can say is COLOR COLOR COLOR, this phone is completely and entirely filled with color from icons to well ...everything...

plenty of verizon bloatware, like vcast music, vcast tones, vcast videos, vznavigator, mobile IM, and cityID.

slide down your notifications toolbar and you now have all your wifi bluetooth gps and plane mode there instead of another window. a plus

yes google search is gone and replaced with Bingaling, yes you can delete bing search but i wasnt able to install the google search widget...

task manager now incorporates an application uninstaller, active application and a summary of RAM memory used so you can monitor that whopping 325mb of RAM and storage memory such as the 2gb of storage memory, 105mb personal data memory and the 16gb External SDcard.. fun fun

other than that everything else is the same as Droid X with the exception of the HORRIBLE car cradle, ready for this?? click navigate and BLAM!!! and i mean BLAMMM! you are hit with none other than our old friend VZ Navigator,... ughhh i shiver at the sound of that and it takes me back to my Omnia 1 days when we fought so hard to unlock its gps to use google maps after verizon was forcing us to use vznav...
search launches bing, view map ? you guessed it, launches Bing? heck, at least have the option the DROID x has to launch another app so you can open google maps, nah not so much, your paying for vznav, using Bing and YOU WILL LOVE IT ( in a drill sergeants voice). desk cradle? just as uneditable...

best part of phone?? Weather Clock, an awesome widget by weatherbug that shows an analog clock with the background as weather. oh and if you try and place a widget that doesnt fit on a screen, it will look for a screen that it will fit on... pretty cool..

so to sum things up, this is the same reason i returned my IPad after two days of use, too many negatives and restrictions outweighing its pros..

oooh i forgot to mention its running 2.1!! not sure why it would even release with 2.1 and no upgrade date set when Droid 2 released with 2.2

For me, all other features would have to be a huge upgrade to overcome the lack of a notification blinker. I can't tell you how many times a day I look over at my phone to see if it's blinking green. If I had to pick it up and wake it up 100 times a day to check for messages, I'm pretty sure I'd kill myself.

How are you able to get to google maps without going to the interwebz if another poster with this phone can't use anything but bing maps or vzw navigator?

Probably because when you use the car dock, it takes you to bing instead. If you just go to the home screen and click google maps, it opens google maps.

Anyways, I got the Fascinate and I'm pretty stoked, The X was Xtremely laggy on the home screens (I know that was reported and I doubt it's any issue anywhere else).

I wish it had a dedicated camera button. Volume rocker is easy to hit.

Beautiful screen. Great battery life so far.

I only have GPS issues if I have verizon/stand alone/google locations turned on, then it's like 100 feet off. When I turn off verizon, it locks exactly where I am.

Bing search can be avoided by using the Google Voice Search app shortcut. I don't even use that, I just use Dolphin when I want to search something on the internet.

I enjoy the 4 dedicated shortcuts on the botton (you can edit 3 of them to whatever you want) and it free ups the other 12 spots for whatever you want in edition.

Overall, I would say it's not worth switching from the X to the Fascinate, but if you are debated between them, it's definitely worth trying out both of them. They're both AMAZING phones.

Especially if form factor is an issue, the Fascinate is sexy sleek which some like, and the X has the industrial look, which other like.

I honestly don't see how anyone can review this phone and not think it's great.

X is the best. It's built like a tank. Voice quality and reception on the X > Fascinate. GPS locks immediately. LED notification. Google search. Will rock with 2.2. Extended battery makes virtually no difference in thickness. Fascinate has that ugly, nasty hump with the ext battery. Volume up/down toggle have no wiggle and don't rattle like the Fascinate. I like the 4 physical keys at the bottom of the phone on the X.

The only thing the Fascinate has over the X is the screen and after seeing it I'm not convinced it's all that great. I like what I see on the LCD screen of the X.

It's really no problem. I downloaded Google Maps, Nav, etc. apps, and put a Voice Search icon on my home screen. Just touch the icon and the Speak Now window opens up and runs a Google Search. Or, hit the Nav icon and Google Nav opens up w/ directions to speak or type destination. Hasn't been an issue for me on the SF. Nor have GPS issues -- I've used Google Nav several times, locks on fairly quick (30 sec to a couple of minutes) and gives audible voice directions.

I've never had an X, but the SF works fine for me. And I prefer the size, the screen, and the appearance of the SF better. A couple DX users in my office, as well as one who is on the fence, agree, FWIW. But I'm sure I'd be equally happy with the performance of the X -- both seem to be great devices.

And did anyone ever notice why the Samsung isn't considered a Droid or have the name Droid next to it? It's because Verizon only uses that name on their high end android devices and the Fascinate isn't considered to be a high end android device.

Also wonder why Bing is on the sammy and some of the other low end multimedia devices and not Google? Its because Verizon only wants Google on the big dogs.

Fail. What about the Droid Eris? :D If that is a "high end" Android phone for Verizon, in your opinion, then you just lost all credibility.

The Fascinate does not feel frail, not in the slightest bit. How about some objectivity here?

Doesn't the X have buttons at the bottom of the screen that one can say "wiggles around and feels cheap" as well?

Don't get me wrong, a Fascinate fanboi I'm not. In fact, I will most likely return the Fascinate for the X because I need a phone with good reception and call quality, and GPS that works. ;) My last phone was a Droid 1 that I've had since launch day in November '09.

Might want to read some of the comments in the review before you post up it up. Objective review it is not.

I read the comments before "posting it up," that's what motivated me to "post it up."

Now that it's "posted up," you also felt free to "read some of the comments," but you came away from those comments with a judgment as to their objectivity; I did not, yet.

However, I found that "posting it up" would be a great way for others to read it, using the link and perhaps motivated by the headings, which I "posted up" for that purpose. ;)

Hope this helps.

I gather your choice in this comparison is the Fascinate. Maybe you'll "post up" some additional comparative review material. Yippee.

How can we take the comparison too seriously though? The comparison was written before the Fascinate even came out...
