Tethering and Mobile AP Cost

Well, currently AT&T does charge for tethering. Which seems silly to me because they charge for data use. It seems to me they could make more money on data if people are plugging their phones into their laptops to play online games.

The leaked version of Froyo still has tethering and wifi AP enabled. Well see if it sticks around in the final version.

Does it cost any extra to use the tethering or Mobile AP features found in Froyo? I thought AT&T use to charge extra for features?

Froyo has not "officially" been released yet for the captivate. The leaked version tethers just fine with no extra cost. The stock captivate can tether if you root your phone and get the app that does it, again free.

Officially, they charge, so I would think the final version of Froyo with AT&T's blessing will not have the AP feature included.

The only way they might enable it is if they use that as a free feature to compete with the other carriers.

Lets hope this is the case

Yea, thats never going to happen. AT&T charges people $10 a month for AT&T navigator on a phone that has google maps for free.

My guess is that AT&T is going to have the AP tethering removed from its official Froyo build and you will need some special AT&T Tethering app to enable it. That will provide a big enough barrier that they can charge people for tethering. They will have no way to know if someone is using tethering from a non-offical Froyo ROM and they probably don't care. As long as you aren't going nuts trying to run your own ISP off a grandfathered unlimited plan they probably won't notice.

might be a bit late with this reply but att will charge you to access this feature from any Froyo att phone. They cunningly placed a service app called tethering manager 1.0 on the phone that locks the feature until it receives a signal from att to unlock it, confirming that you subscribed to it. However, if you had (root) access to this program and uninstalled or froze it (hint) than the phone would not communicate with att when using this feature and the service would be unlocked.
