so i never really had a conversation over 5 minutes on my eris till last night. as i was talking to my aunt i felt the eris get really hot from the earphone and the back of it. it did it again today while browsing the net. it really gets uncomfortably hot!

anyone else experience this with their Eris?

I'm having the same problem..
It always get hot when i'm using the phone but this morning
When i unplugged it, it was extremley hot!! I was trying to unlock it but the screen was just black. I took off the battery and let it cool down then when i turned it back on it still had low batt.
I always leave it charging over night..
Its the first time this happens but if it continues what am i suppost to replace?

not so much heat from the electronic in the phone warming as much as it is the microwave radiation heating your head and whatever may be within.

scary, but true.
Sorry, but lol. That is incredibly preposterous. Phones do not have have enough to power to significantly warm you like that. Unless you are being sarcastic and I completely missed it.

Besides, we are talking about the heat from the phone itself. Personally, I don't really have heat problems with the phone. But I don't stay on the phone long enough for it to heat up anyway (maybe 30 minutes max).

It does heat up a lot if I'm tethering, but its not uncomfortable to the touch.

Mine's been getting quite toasty as of late, but I think it has something to do with the northeastern heatwave. Since temps started crawling into the high 80s/low 90s, I've been getting the amber/green flash indicator (thread here), the battery gets quite a bit warmer than normal and it ceases to charge properly. I've had my Eris since December, and this has only been happening for the last week or two, which is consistent with the rising temperatures in my area (as well as my lack of AC).

If the amber/green flash is happening, I've noticed that's when the charging issues arise. It happens about 15-20 minutes after I plug in the charger on any surface in my house, and after a cool down time equal to (and optionally including) the time it takes to reboot the Eris, I've managed to duplicate that result several times.

My solution has been to take the back cover off of it and lean it up against the back of a box fan on high while it's charging. Instead of blinks in 15 minutes, it's been solid amber for well over an hour and charging normally. I haven't experienced any inability to unlock the phone from the security screen or boot-up issues like some of you are mentioning, but it's not to say I necessarily won't soon.

For right now, if you want a quick fix, either charge it in the path of your AC output, or take the fan route. I'm content with doing that and not having to send my Eris back to HTC, I love it.

Question: Are you guys noticing the heat all the time, or only when charging and using the phone? My Eris only gets warm when I'm charging and using it. That's fairly standard, as far as I know.

I only get it when charging. During calls, it's not really an issue unless I'm out in the heat. But indoors when charging, it's been getting much warmer than normal, that's for sure. I'm only noticing a coincidence, probably, so don't take my word for it, but after today's trial and error, it's at least possible. Also, my calls are relatively short (sub-5 minutes), so I haven't done much beyond what I described above.

Yes, especially if it's plugged into the wall charger and a call comes in; it'll warm up noticeably within 15 seconds of being in the call.

If I've got the device attached to my computer and I start moving files around and going from screen to screen and menu to menu it'll warm up a bit then, as well.

Nothing critical in either case.

not being sarcastic. but i'm glad i could give you a smile.

Cell Phones / Mobile Phones, Cancers and Brain tumors - What Is The Truth?

while the cancer element remains unsure - the heat factor is accepted by most non-cellular industry epidemiologists
That's why I said significant. I'm sure there is a slight increase, but nothing too worrying. I doubt its anything more than maybe a half a degree.

But I wish it worked that way. My hands are always freezing. But holding a cell phone only makes them colder.
