Root Pre-Gingerbread-Rooting side discussion

LOL...Awesome. I'm actually the opposite. I'm stock right now, using LPP, but once the update comes through I'm more than likely to move forward with rooting...finally!...hahahaha.

Although, for those that are long time veterans of rooting, be prepared for my completely NEWB questions because even though I've become very comfortable with Android (and LOVE it), rooting will be like learning a whole new thing again...LOL.

So, if anybody wants to share some "must read" threads or links to prepare me for rooting, I'd gladly appreciate it (via PM would probably be best, so we don't bring this great thread off topic).

Does everyone really need Sense that bad? If not, grab CM7 (CyanogenMod w/ Gingerbread). I have been running the nightly's for the past 2 weeks and they are as stable as any other Rom.

Grab Launcher Pro and you get some nice Sense type widgets.

No 4G yet, but they do have it working already. Just haven't released it yet. Although I am in a 4G market and never turned it on when running a Sense Roms.

P.S. Anyone that is going to make the jump, before flashing CM7, there is a trick on your Sense Rom you must do first to get GPS working.

3 - Launch phone dialer and dial ##GPSCLRX#
4 - Entered MSL Number
5 - Reboot

Then flash CM7!

I understand CM7 is a great ROM and the nightlies are stable as I ran them. I, myself, am a Sense fan. I like how HTC's whole package is wrapped; including the dialer, camera, and plenty of other items.. Most people aren't going to root & flash ROMs or kernels. This thread is clearly speculating the release date of an Authentic Gingerbread release for our phones not comparing ROMs or alternative methods.

I agree with both of you guys. This thread is for the official HTC update - but it's also good to remember that if our phone ever falls by the update wayside, CM is out there for us if we want that. I kinda developed this habit over the years of using a phone until the wheels fall off. Not because I'm cheap or don't want the latest - but because whenever I get something that not only works, it works above my expectations, I like to add that extra satisfaction of longevity to the performance happiness.

BTW - very off-topic, but because it's public, a service announcement is in order. eric, as you know, HTC and Sprint both pushed the GPS-clear-register thing (per your instructions) at one point. They're now warning people that to do that may cause some serious issues and they haven't seemed to offer any explanation on that. Both on are on record as saying that it could lead to a non-functioning GPS and worse. That's understandably confusing. If you have more info on that, please PM me, and we'll go to the thread where we were last discussing that to add any updated info you have, thanks in advance if you have time.

Haven't seen anyone post about an issue with the GPS fix. Quit the opposite, it has worked for everyone that has tried it.

If Gingerbread is officially released for the EVO with the current Sense, then that seems like a failure. With the new Sense, now we are talking! I really like the camera options in the new Sense.

Time will tell, in the meantime I am sticking with CM7. MIUI is looking pretty sweet these days as well. lol

if you are going to root when ginger bread comes out I would highly recommend rooting before and then flashing a rooted stock gingerbread rom. if you take the OTA update it could be another month or 2 before anyone has a rooting method out.

Xda usually has rooted roms within 24 hours of sprints release. you can usually find them before sprint has rolled out the update to all markets.

Actually, I prefer that there is a lag before anyone has a rooting method. That'll give me some time to read up on the basics.

1) Step-by-step procedures for "rooting" phone.
2) Easy way to back up and re-flash entire OEM ROM, in the event I need to revert back.
3) How to find the exact files/apk's to delete bloatware from the phone (or any other things that would hold the phone back from better performance)?

I'll search for these topics as I'm sure they've been discussed somewhere. My main thing is, I want to be fully prepared for rooting the phone AND also be prepared to restore the phone to OEM state.

hi.. i know we all tell you .. and warn you.. and scare you...
you read a lot of people that get into trouble. but that is why we have the forum. a larger percentage do it and finish without issue and never say a word. I have rooted 2 phones (Hero and EVO) with not one issue (never rooted/jailbroken before)

but... it aint rocket science..
it is about as hard as baking a cake. just follow the directions to the letter. you forget the eggs.. or use wrong amount of flower... cake will suck!

make sure you have the correct version for the phone you have.
do not assume anything. dont skip it because YOU think it aint needed.

My best advice.. if you are very scared / worried.
1. get insurance on the phone.
2. print out the instructions.. and re-write the instructions step by step for your own understanding.... then do it

seriously.. once you get it done.. you will understand how easy it is.

The GPs issue as well as Visual Voice Mail not working correctly ended my CM7 experience. Aside from that i REALLY like it.

I'll be happy to have an official Gingerbread / Sense ROM so for the devs to build from.

Yes, I was plagued with multiple repeated voicemail notifications even hours after I deleted the messages.

Should I:

a.) Find an alternate method and root now, so that when Gingerbread is available to my phone, I'll already be rooted.... OR

b.) Wait, and root AFTER Gingerbread is on my EVO?

Also a "Best Source/Method" to root would be greatly appreciated~!!

I agree. Root now! Play around with different roms and kernels to get the feel and speed you like. By the time they release an official GB update, you will be a pro at it and fly right through flashing a new rooted GB rom.

I would try again or find another alternative. Unrevoked should be working now for all firmware versions.

I honestly can't point you too the best way for your version as its been a while since I rooted. your best bet would to check out these two threads and ask some questions there. if you haven't found them already that is.

I never had much luck with unrevoked, I did all the steps necessary and still nothing so I used this method [ROOT] ~~~ HTC EVO - Universal Auto Root ~~~ v2.2 (works with all version)(2/1/11) - xda-developers and it worked perfect. Just fyi, I ran the ruu before doing the script
