Carrier unlock for Motorola in general

I'm looking to jump back on the Android bandwagon.

The Atrix looks like a wicked phone! I was wondering how the carrier-unlocking of Motorola's Android phones has been? Because, Bell Canada is getting the Atrix but I want to use on Rogers.

All I hope is that Motorola doesn't be a spoil-sport and lock the bootloader.

Thanks!

Don't count on it. There have been work arounds for the other phones with the locked bootlaoder but none of the moto phones have been cracked.

Umm... Koush over at xda cracked it back in mid-august on the Droid X, originally with a work-around and interrupt in the boot sequence, now the only thing he can't touch yet (that i know of) is the kernel. You should check out his blog and clockwork recovery app if you are interested in rooting/flashing (i see you're running a droid x).

can you recommend good, safe sites that sell unlock codes?
i have seen lots but some of them look shady and prefer a recommendation.

globalunlock dot com seems safe and already asked them when are they getting their codes.

i live in venezuela and if i can get the phone for 500$ i will ship it down here but of course need the code.

Hi, I want to unlock the phone too, so if you get a reply about when they will have the codes, please post it here :). Also if anyone knows a trusted site that already offers unlock codes for the atrix I'd appreciate if you posted it here.

AT&T doesn't give out unlock codes like T-Mobile does. Not even if you've completed your contract.

This isn't true, I have gotten unlock codes for a few of my nokia phones, once I had them for over a year. Maybe it depends on how nice the person you are talking too wants to be (The last one I got from a chat session with an AT&T customer service rep.)

That is not cracking the bootlaoder that was and still is a work-around. Carcking the bootloader would mean custom kernels and that is not here and may never be here on the locked bootloaders. I have an X so I know full well what has or has not been done. And right now the next release on the X P3Droid can't even get rooted from what he has said.

Totally false! I have received the unlock code (upon request) of 7 phones from AT&T within the last 2 years. On 3 of the occasions, I got the code in less than 5 mins on the phone. The other 4 they had to contact the manufacturer for the code, and I received it in 48 hrs. Actually AT&T is better than tmobile in this regard. Because, they do not have the limitation that tmobile has, that you can ONLY unlock 1 phone in 120 days. You can unlock 10 phones in 1 day if you want. Heck, the phone does not even have to be on the account. You just need to have an account in good standing.

Actually if you read that user agreement thing you clicked through in the pre-order it spells out exactly their unlock policy.

Basically if your account is in good standing and you have been paying your bill for a certain amount of time then you can ask for an unlock code. They will give it to you if they can or they will ask the manufacturer for you but no promises.

I'm going from memory so I may have it wrong but it is funny how obvious it is that nobody read the user agreement stuff :).
