Going to buy NC tonight! will root soon!

I am going to buy this tonight and mess around with it for a couple of days (to make sure its not defective). I'll probably root it on Sunday, but needless to say, i'm scared.

I am going to follow the directions from huskermania on youtube. Does anyone see an issue with using these directions?

he has us plugging it in with the USB for 5 minutes during the root process but doesn't explain why we do that step.

When you plug it into the pc using the USB cable it forces the Nook to reboot off the sd card. I'm not sure why you can't just power it on using the power button but I followed the directions anyway. One thing though that I didn't see in any of the written instructions....when you do plug it into your pc you will not see it boot up right away. The screen will stay dark for a few minutes while it does it's thing. Then it will boot itself back up and you will be rooted.

according to huskermania's vid, it doesn't boot at all by itself. He just leaves it plugged in for 5 minutes, unplugs it, removes the card, then powers it on by himself.

One other thing... nc has been on wifi for quite a bit, but theyhavenot pushed 1.1 update yet. What gives?

My understanding is that updates need to be "forced" if you don't want to wait for it to get pushed. I'm not sure why it can be delayed but I found this information which can force that update.

You can download the official (non-rooted) version from B&N directly and expedite the process. B&N says that it can take a few days while connected to wifi to update automatically.

I just tried that. I downloaded that, then put it on my NC. Then, it tried to run the update. When it did, it err'd out. Odd thing was, it tried to boot into recovery. I haven't even rooted my NC. The only thing I've tried is running Android 2.2 from the SD card. I DID try to run RomManager and Flash CWM. Perhaps that's what happened.

Hmmm...Not real sure where you are in the process. If you installed CWM, then you have removed the stock recovery and loaded a new one. You may want to go here to update: Installing the 1.1.0 update on a rooted NC - nookDevs

Don't be. Just stick to ONE guide (don't bounce around different guides) and follow the directions and you'll be fine.

I've NEVER bricked a device and I've rooted every device I've owned and loaded custom firmwares over and over and over and over...

Stick to nookdevs. I did it last night. No problems, just patience. Only issue I'm having now is that my App DLs are hanging up.

well that sucks. I made the SD card "image" with auto nooter 3.0.0


too chicken to insert into nook. F!

nook devs says it will auto boot for 1.0.1, but NOT 1.0.0

doesn't say anything about 1.1 (which is what i forced last night)

also, the "follow up" (once the NC boots) is wildly different between GM power's post on xda forums and Nookdevs. while huskermania (youtube vid above) does something else.

i'm not sure if the SD image is correct. It appears correct, but it looks like only 39 megs are being used. is that right?

did diskimager create a partition on the mSD? the drive says 31.2 megs FREE! out of 39 megs (on a 2 gig SD card?? wtf.

*Autonooter will not work if you try to use the power button to turn it in, you have to connect it to a power source and it powers on that way.

*If you follow the steps properly, this is what happens. When powered off with an autonooter image on the sd card and inside the nook, you plug it in and it is booting off the SD and then roots itself among other things. The screen will show nothing. This is normal. After autonooter completes, it reboots after about 5 minutes. You then remove the SD card.

*When you burn an image to an SD card, the 'size' will reflect whatever size the image is. As in, it doesnt matter the size of the SD card, you can put autonooter on a 32gig and after burning it, it will show up as 39 megs. After you are done with the rooting process, you can format the sd card and it will be back to its normal capacity.

so, using about 8 megs out of a 39meg partition is correct?

how important is the class of SD card? this 2 gig i'm using has no markings on it. I've checked it multiple times.

I have an 8 gig that is class 2.

For nootering, class doesnt really matter.

If you are burning froyo or honeycomb to an sd and booting off that, then class is critical because what class designates is how fast data reads/writes to it. A class 2 does 2 megs/sec, class 4 does 4 megs/sec, etc. So higher class the better for that since the entire operating system is being run off SD.

Don't be scared. It's hard to mess this up.
