Official Valentine's Day 2011 Idea thread

Hi everyone. With Valentine's Day just around the corner (5 days away), I feel we should all come together and share our thoughts and ideas on this most treacherous holiday. ;) Men everywhere have feared February like a beast in the wilderness ever since Saint Valentine was shot in the buttock with one of Cupid's cute little heart-shaped arrows (I may be a bit off with my history).

To help girlfriends and wives the world over I decided to make a thread where men can post any ideas that didn't backfire horrendously (and even the ones that did) and women can post things that they have enjoyed on Valentine's Day in the past.

The point of this thread being to encourage better, less regretful February's for all. Post, share and enjoy.

I will offer my vast experience to the dilemma (okay, maybe half-vast) ...

First the DO NOT'S ...

Do not buy appliances, even if that's what they say they want. And really, you shouldn't have to be told that. If they want a blender or a dust buster, by all means buy it for them, but not for Valentine's day.

Do not buy crap at the grocery store on the way home. How romantic is cheap candy, an over handled stuffed animal and half wilted flowers?

And, unless the stuffed animal has special and personal meaning, skip those too.

Jewelry is dangerous. One, unless you are willing to spend significant dollars (or Euro, drachmas, Rubles or whatever your local currency) that sub-$100 prefab heart shaped schlock says "unimaginative cheapskate". If you do buy decent jewelry you set up a dangerous precedent for the following year. Be careful.

Do not take them to Denny's for dinner, even if that's all you can afford. A romantic TV dinner at home (if done right) is better. And if you do go out, make damn sure you have reservations. If the restaurant doesn't take reservations, pass.

Lingerie ... now there's a conundrum. If you go "Frederick's of Hollywood" you better be sure she's into the the porn star or stripper look, or the only thing you'll be getting is frustrated. Victoria's secret could be more romantic, but any type of provocative clothing implies that there will be further activities, so make sure "further activities" are mutually desired. And for all that's good and Holy ... MAKE SURE you buy the right size. Too small says "I'm too fat" and too large says "you think I'm this fat?"

Gift cards ... don't. Just don't.

Finally, don't use Valentine's day to try and fix a shaky relationship. Fix the problem, don't bury it in candy-heart sayings. This isn't third grade. (unless it is for you, and then you should definitely NOT use the lingerie idea)

Now the DO's

Be unique and personal. Make the damn card even if it's a finger painted library paste monstrosity. It shows thought and effort.

Candles=Yes. TV=No. Theater=Good. Sports=Walking home.

Dress nicely, even if she isn't. You know you don't care what she's wearing as long as it comes off easily, but she cares that you look good. By the way, she'll still probably look better than you so don't hesitate to tell her so ... multiple times ... sincerely. Fake it if necessary.

If you do the flowers and candy thing, buy a small amount of decent candy. It doesn't have to be in a heart-shaped box, but it should be something she likes. And get flowers from a florist at least two days prior to Valentine's day and keep them watered in a cool dark place so they don't become mulch before you give them to her.

Use your sense of humor, but make it cute. If you want to be provocative buy a small canister of helium and make her a bunch of balloons out of multicolored condoms (unless you are picking her up at her parent's house, then that's probably not a good idea).

Most importantly ... be confidant. Women can smell fear and apprehension on you like a German Sheppard and take it to mean that you are either a dork, or you don't care.

I actually have to disagree with lunatic to an extent.

It really depends on what your girl finds romantic.

For my wife, I'm sending her and her best friend on a scavenger hunt... I'm leaving roses and letters with certain establishments, as well as cash and instructions.

1 of those establishments will be manicure/pedicure.

1 of those establishments will be shopping for lingerie.

1 of those establishments will be simply shopping for a new jacket.

1 will be lunch.

2 more I haven't quite nailed down yet...

While she is doing all of that all day, I'm going to redecorate our bed room. I took a picture months ago of us holding hands (just our hands). I'm having that blown up and printed onto a canvas to hang over our bed, and doing some other minor things like new sheets candles, etc...

That's the surprise that I'll be working on, while she's out having her day with her best friend.

It's not your typical romantic day, but it's definitely something that will make her realize how much I love her.

The most important factor in whether or not she will be happy with you on Valentine's day... how much thought and effort you put into it.

How happy she is will (generally) be directly proportional to how much thought and effort you put into it. If you put a lot, she's going to be VERY happy.

I'll post later about how one year me and the kids were kidnapped by spies who needed her to kill somebody, and sent her on all kinds of errands to acquire the stuff she would need.

Very creative. I agree that the more creative you are with the day goes miles towards making her enjoy it and remember it. I'm still working on my ideas.

I've got a ton of ideas... some of them it's a little late to try now....

I basically created a buried treasure hunt... Print out your treasure hunting instructions (so many paces from so and so tree... etc...) on a piece of printer paper...

Burn the edges of the printer paper with a lighter... so, that the paper isn't straight anymore.

Take a tea bag, heat it in water for about a minute and then let most of the water drip off of the tea bag... and then drag the tea bag over the paper (this will give it a yellow tint similar to old documents).

You can engineer your own way of finding the map.

You can usually get a small treasure chest shaped box at hobby lobby, or such stores. Put your gift in the box... actually bury it. Find the map, and let her lead you on a treasure hunting adventure (it's better if SHE finds the map).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One year, I enlisted the help of friends. I preprinted her instructions and envelopes, and gave those out to our friends (each envelope had cash for her to use at each step of the way).

I took her to chocodelphia, and we saw her friend, so I told her to go inside, and I would get the kids... so, then we drove off.

Her friend told her that her friends and family had been taken hostage, and she would never see them again (each friend was armed with a water gun filled with an untraceable, near instantaneous poison).

The first envelope let her get some chocolate. Then she went to lunch... (I had told her my car broke down the day before... this is important later). Her and her friend went to lunch, but then my wife had to go to the bathroom... her friend leaves (as her and I planned), and I have my wife's purse.

So, then a waiter comes over with an envelope, with further instructions.

To make a long story short... she gets to have lunch with her friend, buy lingerie, new shoes/boots, etc...

One stop informs that she is to kill someone, and gives her a dart gun tipped in the same poison that the "agents" have been carrying all day.

When she goes to kill her target, I show up and tell her that I got me and the kids safe. I have a shoot out with the "agents" in target parking lot, at which point I kill them all, and then I take her to dinner at Olive Garden.

I'll put some more of my ideas in here later...

My wife thinks Valentine's day is contrived B.S. like I do. If I got her something she'd tell me I was nuts.

It is absolutely Contrived BS.

But that doesn't make it any less fun.

Is it a day that we HAVE to do this kind of stuff? No. Is it a good excuse to do this kind of stuff? Oh, absolutely. And there's nothing wrong with having an excuse to show your significant other just how much you love them.

That's MY opinion though.

Okay here's my story.

My wife had been sending me emails about this Tiffany & Co diamond pendent she's been wanting for a while now, so I thought I would surprise her with it for Valentine's day. I ordered it yesterday on their website and selected the option to have shipped by Valentines day, directly to my wife with a card and everything. Confirmation email says UPS ground yada yada and that it should arrive by 2/14/11 .... well that's not what happened.

My wife calls me about 30mins ago, geeky as a schoolgirl, all choked up & stuff. I was like damn is something wrong, because she sounded all weird. All she kept saying was Thank you thank you thank you and I'm like "thank you for what"? "Oh for my necklace, I love you so much" I'm like damn you already got it, now that's a FAIL of epic proportions.

Well come to find out, Tiffany & Co had upgraded my order to UPS next day Air all by their lonesome, I'm not really tripping because better early than late but now they wrecked my entire build-up I was planning to do come Valentine's day. LOL

Just thought I would share

That makes for a less exciting Valentine's Day but at least she got to show off what she got to her friends before they could. She probably enjoyed that. Here's what I have done this year. I am having two dozen red, white, and pink roses with a teddy bear delivered to her at school (she is a teacher). Since Valentine's Day is on a Monday I have planned for us to go to a local ski resort to go snow tubing on Sunday for a few hours followed by hot chocolate and lunch in the lodge by the fire. And for the gift I made her a nameplate that she can sit on her desk. I hand made it out of metal and painted it white with green letters (she is an Ohio University alum). I think she will enjoy it.

Bought flowers from Costco (but I let her pick them out), plus a big plastic jar of choc covered raisins (we just love those things). Then took her to the casino and blew some $$$ then tried out their new buffet, which I must say was quite awesome. During dessert she said, "You didn't get me a card too, did you?"

I rolled my eyes, "Of course I got you a card, Honey."

"Awww... from Target?"

(Rolls eyes again)

"Oh Honey, you're so sweet" <3 <3 smooch <3 <3

And that's what 25 years of being married to your BFF sounds like. :)

Honestly, I am a pretty simple girl.

Yes, I like nice things...I expect nice things but Valentine's day is a holiday i hate. Not because i dont have someone its generally the one day men go out of their way to make their wives/gf feel special(even more then Xmas, Anniversary and birthdays) and the rest of the 364 days are just any old day...

But i've had some wonderful valentine's memories

1)I was at basketball game and a boyfriend had a lovely message on the big screen(Cliche i know)
2)The airplane banner
and most recently V-day 2010
I did something i had always wanted and never had the opportunity to

A picnic...
Simple as that.
That is probably the best memory i have of Valentine's day. Something special like that where it didnt cost a lot of money and it allowed you one on one time together :)

This year, Build-a-bear :)
So much fun!
