Root Adding ROMs After unrEVOked Root

I rooted my Evo 4G about 2 months ago using unrEVOked. After it rooted I installed the root apps I wanted, etc. but when I tried adding ROMs to the device, it wouldn't allow.

I tried Googling the problem and came upon a few forums and blogs where people claimed that since unrEVOked roots the device, they have no real way of knowing how they did it and the guys at unrEVOked aren't leaking their secrets either so it's impossible to flash ROMs to the device.

Two ROMs that come to mind that I wish to flash are:
Baked Snacks
and
some Android 2.3 ROM that is stable enough for my device.

out of curiosity what did it do when you tried different roms?
have you read the rooting for dummies guide stickied here? in the after rooting section there are directions on how to proper way to flash roms.
here are the basics:
1)download your desired rom to your computer
2)move the .zip file over to the root of your sd card (not in any folder)
3)goto recovery (power off and press and hold power+vol down) and make a nandroid
4)wipe data, cache, dalvik cache
5)select .zip from sd card
6)find the .zip fileand select by hitting power button
7)after it is done select reboot now and your done
congrats you have a new rom

Yep, I tried just what you said about 3 times and each time it said "No .zip found" or something like that...I suppose I'll head over to the "rooting for dummies" section you're talking about, thanks!

that is hboot you are in. you need to select recovery from the menu. from there you can do the steps above.

Yep, that's where I was at. I selected "Recovery" from the list and it went through checking for the .zip file I put in the root of the SD card and said it couldn't find it.

It's weird...I had Clockwork but now it's back to the stock recovery with Hboot, FastBoot, etc. and the white background...last I tried to access this, it was all in Clockwork.

EDIT: Also I had a Clockwork app for adding ROMs or managing them...that's gone too and I can't exactly say when that was gone.

My phone is rooted because I can use wifi tethering, cachemate, and some other apps that require root. Very weird...

Was anything else on your phone wiped out? Did you flash a PC36IMG.zip of some sort (you'd have one on the root of your card)? If you go to hboot, you still have S-OFF, right? Then when you go to recovery from hboot, where exactly does that take you?

My phone has not done that nor any of the people I know who own rooted Evos rooted by unrEVOked.

The hboot isn't actually a function I can use on my phone...like it isn't an option I can click. I did not flash the PC36IMG.zip nor do I have it on the SD. I did have the file, but deleted it. I got it before I used unrEVOked to root the phone and have not put it back on since.

i would go to the ROM's web page, where you dl'ed it from... compare apps and services on your phone to the ones the dev has listed... try each app out once or twice... that should give you a good idea as to the completeness of the ROM...

you can also verify it by going into phone settings/about phone/software information

Hboot is just your bootloader, you get there by turning the phone on while pressing volume down. It's not some selection you can make anywhere. From hboot, you should select recovery, which will reboot the phone into recovery. Are you able to get to recovery that way?

So I went to unrEVOked's site and got unrEVOked Forever directions:

I did everything they told me to do from the top to the bottom.

I installed the unrEVOked recovery and it said it installed correctly. The I installed the custom unrEVOked splash image. And it said that installed correctly and once it was installed it rebooted and had the custom unrEVOked image at startup.

Then when I tried installing an official recovery, Amon-Ra recovery, it said that it installed correctly.

Then I put the BakedSnacks 1.8 onto the root and tried to flash it but when it started it got about half way through then said "installation aborted". I tried it about 2 different times. Not sure what went wrong.

Okay, good. That sounds like a problem with the flashable zip for baked snacks. Where did you get it from? I've heard of this happening quite a bit with that ROM.

Did it say anything about not verifying the signature? Try and select not to verify the signature on the page before selecting the zip to flash. Make sure you make a nandroid, and wipe data/Dalvik-cache or use Caulkin's Format All before trying to flash.

To XtremeDays: it didn't say anything about a signature. Frankly, I don't know what a signature is lol

To akazabam: I got it directly from BakedSnacks' website. I downloaded it to my computer, then put it on the root of my SD card. Well if it's a problem with that, that's great news for me! At least that it maybe a problem with the ROM and not my device...

I'm searching the web for another ROM that seems to my liking. I was going to try an Android 2.3 ROM but I don't know if that's such a good idea as I've heard that they aren't fully stable. Any that you could recommend? I'd really like one for battery life, that's why I chose BakedSnacks.

I decided to go with a version of Fresh, 3.0.0.1 I think. lol I'll post what happens when I try to flash it. I'm downloading it using the ClockWork app so if something goes wrong, maybe it might be due to that.

1) Flashable zips are typically signed. What that means is, special certs are included in the zip that recovery will use to verify the integrity of the included files. If the zip is not signed, you'd have to turn off signature verification in recovery. If the signature or files in the zip were bad, you'd have to redownload the file. In either case, it would likely fail immediately, and not get part of the way through.

2) ROM choice rarely doesn't affect battery life too much. It can affect speed for various reasons, but not *too* much. You'll find that a different kernel will affect both battery and speed, along with other factors and things you can change related to it. That isn't to say you don't want a custom ROM, though. There are still many benefits to them.

3) You can find a list of ROMs here. Mikfroyo and Myn's are good choices, and if you search the first few pages of the Evo root section here, you'll find a lot of other good recommendations. Try any of them, and see if it works. If it does, there's a problem with that zip for bakedsnacks. If it doesn't work, something else is wrong, and we'll figure it out when we get there .

Fresh 3.0 is very old. 3.5.0.1 is the current release from Flipz and is very stable. I ran that one for a couple of weeks after rooting my phone and was very happy with it. Mikfroyo is also a very good rom choice. I am currently running Evervolv Beta3(Android 2.3 based) and am happy with it. Only 4g and HMDI do not currently work but they are being worked on.

Clockwork app being Rom Manager? If so, it has a tendency to be buggy and not function correctly. My suggestion would be to read through Rooting for Dummies and learn the steps to do it manually. You are more likely to not have issues doing it that way and you learn your way around in case you ever have to do anything in recovery to restore your phone.

Okay, I kinda figured that was what a signature was. I had heard about it but never paid much attention to it. I'm going to try another ROM and see what I get.

Yeah, the ROM Manager, that's the app I was talking about. I figured it wasn't so good, anyway, it didn't download because I need to free some space so it looks like I'll be doing it the old fashioned way.

I only went with that version of Fresh because I heard another user on an XDA forum say that it was good although his post was from about a year ago and I know that many of these ROMs have issues with them such as the 4G and HDMI not working although I rarely ever use either but still...but if you say that that version is good, I'll use that one instead. 4G and HDMI aren't a big deal for the moment.

I went to Rooting for Dummies here and that's what caused me to go back to unrEVOked's site and do all of the stuff I did. But I'll go back and see what else is said there.

Thanks for the ROM list too. I'll check it out and see what ROM would best suite me.

The only ones I know of currently that do not have 4g and hdmi working are AOSP roms(Evervolv and CyanogenMod are two of them). Sense roms have everything working to my knowledge and are very stable if they are full releases. Some Devs have beta releases of there work that is still in the process of being debugged and finalized. The current version of Fresh is on the list that Akazabam linked you to.
