Just got this comment for Listables yesterday:

by Doug (March 9, 2011)
When I search for a file it just searches the ones on my phone. Totaly worthless thought this was p2p like emule or limewire
Seriously, what do you do with people like this? They download a free app, have misunderstood its purpose, and then give it one star for not being what they wrongly imagined? Do people download email clients and complain "it doesn't stream video!?" Listables doesnt even have the internet permission.

I've gotten 3 1-star ratings in one day from this, which is highly unusual (I haven't had a one star rating in 3 months). Is this one guy with a grudge or what?

I won't even get into how Limewire is being sued into oblivioin.

ugh

/yeah I know, "rub some dirt in that wound soldier!" ;)
// thanks for letting me vent

Since your app is free, I am guessing that the rating is going to be less of a show stopper for people that are going to try it out. I mean it's free, what's to lose. Now if you were getting this on an app you were charging for I would be a little more concerned. I would just ignore it as there isn't much you can do anyway right. Maybe add some of the complaint to your app description? Sounds crazy but it just might work.

I might also point out you could make the usage of the proggy more clear.
i.e. "If you want to share a list of your apps with a friend via BlueTooth or..."
In that way, you take the people who don't understand the use out of the comment field.

Also be aware that the rest of us, read past comments such as that - when it is clear the poster did not get the intent of the app.

Ouch, sorry to hear that. People just expect the world for free these days, great evidence you provided of that here. I get annoyed reading reviews like that when i'm searching for good apps. It wastes everyone's time but I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinion no matter how stupid they are. In the long run, the good reviews will outweigh the bad ones if you've made a good app. Don't worry about the dummies.

Don't worry most the time I don't pay attention to negative reviews unless they are consistent or point out specific flaws. I really noticed a lot of stupid commenters last summer when Shazam went to a paid service and people were complaining that you wouldn't be grandfathered in to their Pay Service if you previously were using the app. As RazzMaTazz said, there is no app to fix stupidity. And if there was the really stupid people would have no clue what the app did.

On a side note, I just checked out your app in question and it is something some friends of mine have been looking for. I'm checking out the free version now but look for another donation user very soon.

Market needs to be able to let the community rate down stupid reviews

I just went to the app and marked the comment as spam. I always do this with people who completely don't know what they're talking about. I will also at least mark them as unhelpful if the comment doesn't really apply to the app or is irrelevant.

Only thing is that I'm really not sure if google really does anything about it. Google probably will remove comments marked as spam when a certain number of people mark it as spam. I don't know if marking comments as unhelpful does anything at all tho...

I don't think this will affect you in the long run. I have the opposite problem. Don't have a single comment or rating on my app, good or bad. I have my fingers crossed that it's a good thing, What's your experience with the comparison of free vs paid app in this regard?

What's your app? I'll take a look.

I've noticed that people tend to obviously download and rate more as free but I don't have a lot of experience with paid actually.

My first app Listables was an app I just learned Java and Android on, so I set it free, and asked people to donate only if they liked it. I didnt want people to have to pay for my mistakes as I learned. I was a Flash developer for over 10 years before Android, so I knew how to program conceptually, just not specifically with Java/Android.

So when it came to comments for the donate version they are all good just by the nature of the fact that those people chose to donate. Though one funny thing was that out of 11 comments, 2 of them are for 4-stars (one of which was from a guy who posted a great positive comment with his 4-star rating :) ). Not a big deal though I think that's just how some people work. 4 is as high as they'll go unless the app wins the lottery for them or finds them true love :)

Mostly the comments were mixed for the free version of Listables though. Often people would hit a Force Close and give 1-star and never come back, and that's frustrating but understandable. Or, they would give ratings about a feature not working for them. But these are legitimate complaints and only served to make me work harder and fix those issues. Some people would even come back and give 5-stars after their issues was fixed.

I should also say that Listables did kinda suck in the in the beginning. It was very simple and I neglected it for over 6 months as many competitors popped up. It was released in Feb 2010 and as of November-2010 it had as low as a 3.78 rating with only 7000k ish downloads and only 24% keeping it installed and only 30-40ish ratings.

But I revamped the entire app starting in late November/December and it's now over 12k downloads with 31% keeping it installed and an average of 4.08 out of 118 reviews. So it was nice to know you can recover from some bad ratings, and that hard work can pay off.

Anyways, at the moment I have no comments on my newest paid app (BlueMuze) and only 3 ratings. No comments on the trial version either with only 5 ratings there.

However it's only been out 10 days and just crossed 500 downloads last night. Ultimately I'm pretty pleased with it though. A good numer of people that download are buying the app, and it seems to be increasing, so that makes me think people are enjoying the trial enough to want to upgrade.

The money is tiny so far but it's a good start so I'm confident the sales will increase :) (crosses fingers)

Anyways I think there is some psychology to it all too. once people see a comment they are more likely to also comment. Sometimes if they see a comment with a rating they find incorrect they are also more likely to comment and rate. So if someone sees a good app with 1 star in the comments, they may post a 5 start rating just to counter the 1 star, and vice versa.

Anyways, thanks for the post. You're right though, I'm not too worried about the long term ratings, I just found that comment particularly hard to "process" since the person clearly didn't understand what they were downloading. And found it really odd to get 3 1-star ratings in a single day after 2-3 months of mostly getting 5-star ratings.

Regardless, AF to the rescue! This was all probably more info than you needed but hope it was helpful :)

Such nice things everyone in this thread said :) it's the real strength of Phandroid/AF -- this community is filled with really cool/nice/smart people.

I wrote the Whats For Dinner app. It is a paid app so no harm no foul if you don't want to spend money on it. I completely understand. It just makes me nervous sometimes, you know how it can be too quiet? I realize my app isn't for everyone, and I would like to take the lack of reviews as at least a sign that there's nothing wrong with the app. I know that if I paid for an app, and there was an issue, I would be "on the phone" as soon as I could.

Looks cool, a bit over priced though (just my opinion), for what it does and considering the comeptition.

One thing you could consider, that strikes me right off the bat, is that if you have a "content" app, something people use often (like daily), then you have the option of monetizing with advertising instead of a one-off. And in such a crowded market as humour-conetent and cooking, you need to make a name for yourself.

Though I'm not sure how to make that work in widget form. You should get some Google Analytics going in there and see if you can figure out how often people are opening the main screen.

I'm planning on adding this soon myself just havent gotten to it yet.

Android Developers Blog: Analytics for Android Apps

Anyways, I will give the app a try later, I'm off to play Dragon Age 2 for now -- decided I needed a mini vacation from Android for a bit :)
