Root Hmm... Whaduya Think Happened?

First, a little background info:

I decided to root my Droid1 about a week ago using this method (thanks OMJ!). Once that was done I quickly grabbed Rom Manager and perfomed a nandroid backup (as was suggested, and proved quite useful!). After a few days everything was fine save for a lot of homescreen redraws.

So today I decided to take the plunge. I got Titanium Buckup and backed up all apps and data then flashed the Ultimate Droid rom. Once that was done I rebooted. Then poked around a little and restored TiBu backup, everything fine. Played around a little more then decided to reboot my phone and got stuck on the "Red Droid Eye". Pulled battery, rebooted in recovery . . . always stuck on "Red Droid Eye". Hmm...

So after a little panicy feeling, I restored from my nandroid backup and everything's just the way I left it (Nice!).

Questions from here are many, but I'll first to the people here ask simply- what do you think happened?

When restoring with TiBU, did you restore EVERYTHING? Often custom ROM's will change around the file structure (or something...few too many glasses of wine) which means that you'll be restoring stuff which you shouldn't.

yes, DO NOT restore any system data. only apps and their associated data. i.e. only things with white writing on the list.

above and beyond that, i personally would advise agains using rom manager to make backups and download/flash roms. ive seen its use cause a number of wierd issues(like the bootloop youre describing),and IMO its much safer to dowload roms to your PC,transfer them to the phone via usb cable,and then boot into your custom recovery to backup/wipe/flash roms.

which UD rom did you try running? UD 3.xxx is a Gingerbread rom and there have been many noted issues using TiBu going from a Froyo rom to GB rom. I have read a lot more post about TiBu causing issues than I have about rom manager. Many of the new roms automatically download all your apps you had before from the market after they are up and running. If you are going to use TiBu, I would suggest that after you have your new rom installed give it some time and it will notify you when it has all your apps downloaded and which, if any, didn't go through, then use TiBu to restore the data for each individual app. Just my thoughts

the main issues people were having using titanium to go from 2.2 to 2.3 were trying to restore system settings. titanium is fairly safe if you ONLY use it to restore apps and app data.

some apps just may not work yet on 2.3,wich is not the fault of titanium or the rom developer.

most of your apps will come back. everything listed in "my apps" in the market should automatically download when you go to another froyo or gingerbread rom.

when i flash something new, i give it some time to download everything,then if any apps are missing i use titanium to only restore "missing apps and data". this has worked fine for me. that way it keeps the use of titanium to a minimum.

Rule of thumb with TiBu is that you can restore the system data that is listed in green (stuff like SMS/MMS, Homescreen Widgets, Account settings, WiFi properties, etc.) If it is green then you should be fine.

Also I have never ever had a problem with ROM Manager, I really don't see how it could cause an issue at all. It does the exact same steps as you would do if you are downloading and installing manually. All it does is act as a GUI for the recovery. I'm willing to bet that most problems are caused by user error.

BTW, if you get the redraw issue again, use this code process:

In a terminal,
type su and enter.
Then type echo ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 >> /data/local.prop and enter.
Then reboot.

You can use Terminal Emulator from the app store to get to a terminal screen. Fixes it right up!! But, if you flash a new ROM, you have to do it again. I wish I could remember where this came from, but I saved it to Evernote a long time ago.
