Dust or No Dust?

Do you have a dust issue?

This issue will never be resolved, our devices will never be replaced and Sprint will continue to assert this is not a warranty issue and nobody else has complained.

Just another crappy device failure that is accepted as 'not that bad'.

I'm sorry, but I have to side with Sprint/HTC on this one.

I mean really guys. As much as I love my phone, I don't make a place in my bed for it at night. I don't give it a pet name. I don't have an extra place setting for it at the dinner table.

It has some dust under the screen. Sure, I see it when the screen is off. Do I notice it when the screen is on? Not at all. Does it impede me from being able to use the device to the full extent? Not one iota. IMHO, it's really actually better than a dead pixel on an LCD. It's not sitting there, poking you in the nose while it's on and you're using it.

It's not perfect, what's the big deal? It's a piece of electronic equipment that's being mad in this day and age. Go figure, it's a piece of replaceable electronic equipment.

Hold out until the next latest and greatest thing comes out in the coming year and this will be old hat. I bet when you're in your 30s (snide remark) you won't even remember this phone existed.

:D

Lol @ siding with sprint/htc

The part of this issue that bothers me is that I'm positive they knew about this prior to releasing it. Also, I can see dust particles on white and black screens and I'm sure other people can too. I still love this phone more than any other Sprint phone, but listening to people "side" with the manufacturer/cell provider is more annoying than the dust.

I had my phone for about 2.5 weeks and I am noticing some dust now around the lower left hand corner of the screen but doesn't go any higher than the lower 1/4 of the screen. I have the invisible shield by zagg and I do tend to carry the phone in my pockets. I would to say as of right now it isn't really noticeable unless the screen is off.

i have a htc hero (rc26) on the sprint netwok for almost two months now and i have noticed dust under the screen. i do carry my phone in my pocket alot without any case.

i have a hero with google (rc26) on the sprint network and have owned it for almost two months now and there is dust under lower left side of screen.

I am on my second Hero and after 5 days this one has dust as well. I am not sure that exchanging again is going to help. The guys at Best Buy were real cool about the exchange.

I had a lot! Of dust like a week after I got mine and its the non hero one.. I took it to Sprint to clean and they left smuges and messed up my invisable shield cover  so I opend it myself and cleaned it good ... its been two weeks since then and I can see the dust coming back already

I've had my Hero for a little over a month.

I've got the Seidio Innocase on it. I carry it in one of those microfiber bags from Sunglass Hut. Every night and morning I "Dust Off" the screen and wipe it with a microfiber cloth.

I have dust under my screen :-(

I don't know how I could be any more careful. I do suggest keeping the screen covered overnight. One night I didn't cover my screen and, by morning, some dust had already settled on it.

I'm a compulsive "wiper" -- I like my electronics shiny and smear free. I'm trying not to be too bothered by this; Sprint plans can't be beat. But this evasive "it's cosmetic" attitude is disappointing. I'm hoping HTC figures something out soon.

I bought my Hero the first day they were available at the Sprint store. I've had dust from day 1. My wife bought hers Christmas eve and she doesn't have anything under her screen. I'm thinking about taking my phone apart to get rid of the dust.

umm, you will end up with not only more dust in it, but also more of a chance of getting dust in the future after that. These things are put together in a 'clean' facility...

well the poll's already closed but
about a month, with google, and WITH DUST!

i carry it in my pockets (pants, jacket, scrubs, whatever) and i can also notice that i've gained more dust over time.
UGH! annoying :(

Hey guys....Moment owner here however considering switching to the Hero for a couple reasons I wont go into. The one drawback of switching for me is this dust issue...or else I would have already made the jump.

While HTC and Sprint work out a fix, if that is even going to happen, I think I might have a suggestion that will at least "Hide" the problem? At least getting rid of the eye sore that the Dust creates.....

Has anyone with a Hero tried one of the Mirror screen protectors? As I understand it, you cannot see the dust when the screen is on correct? So, when it is off, instead of the black screen which makes the dust noticeable, why dont you slap on one of these mirrored screen protectors. I can't be sure but seems to me that this would "Hide" the dust altogether? Maybe someone has already tried this and if so, I am sorry for the duplication. I did not see anything on this so thought I might try to help out!

Up to 35% based on this poll. Wow
Not very scientific I would say.

Still waiting for pictures. Anyone? I want to see these horrible dust issues.

I carry my phone in my pocket all of the time without a cover and still don't see dust. I must have clean pockets. :D

In bright light, the dust can be seen with or without the screen on. Out in the daylight with the sun on the screen, the dust REALLY stands out to the point of being so bright as to not being able to see the lit screen underneath it. Shade the screen from direct light with your hand and the dust disappears.

Ok....wasn't sure how significant it was. It was worth a shot. :)

I too would like to see a picture as to what this dust looks like? Anyone got one or two to share?

I'm assuming you mean "not very big sample size"?

If so, you are correct...however, 86 is not a bad sample size either, I actually suspect the % would increase with more participants

I'm not sure I understand your tone, you sound like you are actually mocking this issue, which is absolutely ******ed.

As time goes on I really am starting to not mind the small bit of dust, but venting on forums with other frustrated users feels better, especially because you know you're not the only one.

This seems to be a common problem. There are threads elsewhere of Droid users having this issue and someone just posted about the Nexus One having this issue. I think sadly it's just a part of these new smartphones

I would have expected better from HTC than to have this problem. I've had a few different HTC phones (Mogul and Touch Pro among them) and these did not have the dust problem. My guess is there there is not air tight seal between the LCD panel and the outer plastic touch screen. Dust slips in but it's a b_tch to get out.

i would exchange mine but i know they wont because the damn cover stained the phone.

good luck with this one

LOLOL!! This damn grey phone! I was so proud of the deal I got on the leather holster off eBay, but the cheap craftsmanship became evident when I noticed the black stain which had transferred all over it. Had this phone been black like most I don't think it would have been noticed. I have tried everything to get it off aside of sanding.

I don't have dust (non-with google, purchased early release from best buy) BUT, I NEVER, ever keep it in my pocket, because sadly I'm paranoid. I don't prefer holster, but to keep from getting dust I can live with it. HTC only seems to make horizontal holsters? I would have bought a higher end vertical holster but couldn't find one. No sense in bothering with it now.

I find it REALLY odd that not a single post in this thread says ANYTHING about how the dust is getting in or what to do about it. Does everyone think this is magic dust that's getting teleported into the phone?? lol

Anyway, it seems pretty clear there is a small slit of open space between the bottom of the Sprint HTC Hero screen and the silver button area. When the phone is on, you can actually look through the slit and see the light coming through from behind the screen. There's also a small sliver of space running all the way around the small silver button area. That's probably where the dust is getting in.

Seems to me that putting on a screen protector, but sliding it down just a tiny bit to cover the main slit would help keep dust out. Not sure what to do about the rest of the opening around the silver button area.

Obviously, this is a "gap tolerance" issue during manufacturing. Seems to me HTC could've put a gasket all the way around the silver area....and tightened up the manufacturing tolerance...to help prevent this.

Other ideas? Perhaps someone could come up with a do-it-yourself disassembly and gasket-insertion thread?

Well, quite a few posts back I stated just that. I suspected that it was getting in around the silver button plate.
