Okay, I have managed to find everything I have been looking to configure with one exception.

The stock email program works fine for me, except for work email, so I have it all setup.

I believe the notification sound is set under Personalization->Sound Sets

How on earth do you edit a Sound Set? It let me make one, but not modify it.

And If I'm wrong, where do I change the mail app notify sound?

Have these been working for anybody? When I set a different message notification sound from Personalize->Notification sound, it doesn't seem to take effect... When I get a message, the sound that it makes is the one set in the Messaging app under Settings->Notification Sound. Is there a reason to have both? Especially since only the one within the app seems to work?

I was wondering this too.

The notification setting in "Sounds" is more of a general notification sound. If you have emails or messages set to the default sound, it will use that one. If you change it to something else, it uses what you set it to.

So are you saying that works for you? Because if I set the Messages app's setting to "Default", it rings the default (as in, the main default notification, NOT the messages notification set within the Personalization menu).

OK. I just tested this and it seems to be working fine. If I change the notification sound in Personalization, it does change the message ringtone for the stock messaging app. It doesn't work for after market apps, though.

ETA: I'm going to try again by changing the sound in messages, then trying to revert back to the default --

OK. I changed the message notification to something completely different and did a test text. The new notification sound worked. I then went back into messages and changed it back to default, did another test text and it did revert back to default. I'm not sure what's causing it to hang on your end.

By, "changing the notification sound", do you mean the main one? The one that shows up on the Personalize main screen? Or the one for Message, that you access by touching "Notification" and then touching "Message"? The former works for me, but I don't want to change the sound for everything. The latter should set *only* message notification, but seems not to want to work.
