I rooted my Samsung Epic 4g phone in back January, mainly so i can tether. Sprint has a system update going on now, I knew it was going to happen soon, just didn't know when. Anyway, i got the system update message this morning.
I wanted to know if the update will affect my root? Do i need to unroot my phone before running the update? Am I going to have to re root my phone once the update is complete? Will the steps of rooting be the same? and will the update even allow me to root my phone? I did the one click root.

Prior to my Epic 4g I had the Palm pre and everytime there was an update I had to re root my phone, it was a real pain.

I don't mind the update but really don't want to have to do the root process again or don't want to not be able to root my phone.

I will gladly appreciate if someone could answer my questions.

Thank you,
Marcy

Hey Marcy - I believe since you're already rooted, you can download the update, but I do believe it will fail, especially if you have removed any default sprint applications.

I do know there are some threads over on XDA regarding how to go from EB13 to EC05 while maintaining root, but I haven't looked too much into them as I don't plan on taking that route. You may want to check them out and figure out your best course of action that way.

By now, there should have been enough people as good test samples to figure out rooting from stock EC05, but I haven't personally seen an actual verification if the "old" way will work with EC05.

Ok, thanks for getting back to me on this, I will check out your suggestions 1st, if that's too much for me, i will have to unroot, update then re-root it following the 2.2 rooting steps. I will let you know.

Thanks again !!

Check out this http://androidforums.com/epic-4g-all-things-root/304838-eb13-ec05-root.html, . I had root 2.5 (I think that right number)RFS not EXT4 and I did the update used in the link with no issues. I did however reinstall the Asphalt 5 Demo APK that one click root removes. I don't know if I needed to or not, but I did it as a precaution to getting the OTA update, which I didn't wait for. The process in the link retains root, and deletes the Asphalt 5 demo again. Not sure it will work for those with EXT4 roots though. My phone was stock EB13 other than One Click 2.5 root.

Without the Asphalt 5 demo, the update would've failed and your phone would've blown up. Okay, that last part isn't true, but the update would've failed.

Thanks for clarifying, I have been preaching to install the Asphalt 5 demo on three different forums, but wasn't sure it was necessary.

It's a default sprint app, and to my knowledge, it checks for each one of them before the update starts installing. I've seen a few error logs people have posted and I've seen differnet apk files listed, asphalt being the number one contributor.

I believe this to be because it's removed when using the CWM method of one-click rooting.
